How do I fix heating issue on my iPhone 16 Pro?

Hey there! I just got the iPhone 16 Pro 1TB, and it’s overheating like crazy. It’s kinda scary, feels like it might explode in my hand while I’m typing this. I bought it less than 24 hours ago. Any tips? Also, what’s the return policy? Thanks

Some activities such as charging or a lot of computational activity (e.g., video), generate heat. Some warmth is to be anticipated.* "Keep your iPhone, the power adapter, and any wireless charger in a well-ventilated area when in use or charging."** Read this article about keeping your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch within acceptable operating temperatures - If your iPhone or iPad gets too hot or too cold - Apple Support

Changes in software such as upgrades may introduce new features which may add to power drain and heat generation. Check Settings > Battery to see if there are apps running that use a lot of power. If there are, decide if you can turn off a service such as Settings > General > Background app refresh when an app is in the background, or Settings > Privacy > Location Services. If you think there is a problem with a device, have Apple inspect it. Go to this page to find your nearest Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) or Apple Authorized Distributor (AAD) --> Find Locations

How to make a Genius Bar appointment

1. Go to Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options - Apple

2. Go to "Get hardware help".

3. Select your hardware and continue selecting options requiring replacing parts until you see "Bring in for Repair"

4. Sign in with your Apple ID

It could also be if you first got it then it is doing some setting up, requiring a lot of computation. Give it a day or two and see if there's the same problem.

February 14,2025 I just set up my new iphone16 pro last night and noticed how hot my phone was getting. Also saw other comments about the battery. As someone who was told the battery is supposed to last a lot longer and is bigger … I just woke up to 58% battery lol. My iPhone 12 had under 80% capacity and certainly did a lot better than this . Kinda regretting this upgrade lol.

Actually it hasn’t solved the overheating issue on this iPhone 16 Pro (running iOS 18.3) when playing back downloaded films via Apple TV app (when not connected to the internet). !?

This morning played another movie for just ten minutes (when not connected to the internet) on the Apple TV app and the iPhone 16 Pro is stupidly hot again. !

I hear you about playing back movies being a processor and SSD data intensive task… But, as I said before, this doesn’t happen with Netflix or Disney+ apps when playing back movies offline… !? So why does this only happen with the Apple TV app???

Perhaps Apple can answer this question directly?

Have also noticed this in Apple TV app… When downloading BBC Planet Earth series, it shows two sets of the same episode, as if it downloaded it twice… !? When I tried deleting one of the doubled-up episodes, the other episode is deleted too… !?

Could this glitch have something to do with the overheating i.e. this doubling up of episodes… ?

I recently purchased a new 16 pro max and am having all the issue I see on-line. Over heating to the point of concern and warning message, black screen when trying to use camera to the point you can't see the image or controls, battery life while told it was to be much better than my previous phone is 1/2 of what life was with my 13 pro. Try and use your fingers to manage camera screen zoom and it starts taking a video. This phone is really a POS and I should of kept my 13 pro max. I recently missed such beautiful picture opportunities while on a trip because of the camera problems. Has anyone had success with a meeting with the genus bar at an apple store to get problems fixed. OR were you just blown off and told it's all in your mind and user error? Oh yes i have the current updates 18.3.1 thank you

I just purchased the I-Phone Pro Max 16 a couple months ago and my phone gets really hot and feels like it’s going to explode/catch fire. This is the 4th time I’ve experienced this. My finger tips get real numb. I literally have to power it off to let it cool off. Can someone please explain why this occurs or what steps to take moving forward?????

I have just received my 4th IPHONE 16 Pro replacement phone today after charging and overheating issues from day one. I have never had issues like this before not to mention the time to debate, negotiate, warranty, Assurion, Verizon the vast techs and their head scratching has been unbelievable! Wish me luck as I attempt to set up another one! I tried to go back to 15 but would have to repurchase with no upgrade option because I’ve already used upgrade on an awful phone!

Yeah it’s absolutely annoying even with the Apple silicone it gets so hot. Some people think it’s that the A18 pro chip is that good that its thermal performance is outmatched which I think is unlikely cause thermal performance should be efficient especially on the pro phones. Anyone have issues with the pro max? Thought the bigger body would radiate heat more efficiently

No, they never really have. When I worked for Apple we were not allowed to visit the forums or we risked termination.

i have the iPhone 16 Pro Max two months ago. I’ve been an iPhone user since the iPhone 4 as well as being a loyal user of other Apple products/services. I’ve got three iPads, one brand new, two iMac, one brand new as well as the watch. I was trained as an AppleCare specialist in iOS and MAC software. I worked for them helping other Apple users dealing with issues like this. So, I know how to take care of my products as well as the tips and tricks (which I religiously keep up with when it comes to new features/tips/hacks, etc.). I have done everything I know how to do as well as a couple of other things people have suggested. My iPhone gets really hot. I recorded a 7 minute video and when I tapped stop and picked up the phone which was attached to a selfie-stick, my phone was REALLY hot. Almost too hot to touch. This never happens with any other iPhone I have had. I could have recorded 20 videos and it would not get hot. As I am writing this, it is getting hotter and hotter, especially at the top near the camera lenses. Nothing I’ve tried has worked. At what point should I contact Apple? I mean, I have never been so alarmed as I was when I touched this phone after I recorded that video. As soon as it cooled down, I came on here to find out what was going on and now it is getting as hot as it was when I recorded that video a few minutes ago. I love Apple, but sometimes I wish they would get things right before releasing them and then fixing what’s wrong. Anyway, this is more of a rant than a question, but if there is anyone out there that has a solution that is guaranteed to work, please let me know. I hate having to make an appointment with Apple when I just got this phone and spent a lot of money for it only to be having this issue which is a major inconvenience.

I agree...but my iPhone 16 Pro is, in fact displaying the thermometer saying it needs to cool down. In the house. At 72 degrees. In my very humble opinion, at this point in the iPhone's history overheating at any scale is ridiculous. It's odd how so many people give it that old "don't push it." Apple needs to address the problem; iPhones have been around way too long to spend $1100 and simply be told "it's really working hard." It was built to do that, or should have been.
