Camera for iPhone 12 Pro Error - RAW Photos are corrupt after IOS 18 update

After updating to IOS 18 on my iPhone 12 Pro, my camera can't take RAW photos anymore. Photos taken in RAW format produce white or reduced resolution photos. On the reduced resolution photos, an error icon is shown stating "Unable to Load Photo - An error occurred while loading a higher quality version of this photo".

The only solution I've found is to switch to turn off RAW and take photos in JPEG mode. Restarts have not helped. Anyone else having this issue?

I have been having this issue but I think I found the problem. Turn off High Efficiency in the format options. I set mine to Most Compatible. I can now take RAW photos and the corruption is gone. The error about not being able to load as a better quality photo is loading is gone also. The HEIF/HEVC formats are busted with the 18 and 18.1 iOS release.

I personally do not want my RAW photos compressed in anyway so I'm glad this worked. To test out my theory, I set it back to High Efficiency and the corruption returned and I could not load the photo. Switched it back to Most compatible and the error disappeared again, and I could load the photo. So it's my believe the corruption and loading errors are due to the High Efficiency mode. The iOS update to 18 must have broke that.

Anyway, give what I said a shot and let me know if it works for you in this post also!.

Update: 11/5/2024

My original issue with raw photos being corrupt seems to be fixed. Ever since updating to iOS 18.1 on my iphone 12 pro, I can take photos in raw mode again.

I've tested close and far objects and have edited photos on my phone with no issues.

I haven't tested if I can download photos off my phone by plugging it into my laptop. But if there are still issues with this, I will update this post with that information.

Cheers,

Jon

Another very important thing, I just found out: previously shot RAW picture which were invisible, which I had deleted (but kept on occupying memory space, as I described) suddendly appeared in a special "recovered photos" folder.

This folder will show in your Photo app, among the other folders. Once you select them and click on the recover option, you will have them back!!!

Even if that proves existing fault to depend on visualization features, not acquisition/processing ones, God bless Apple for succesfully dealing with problem!

Yes, same thing is happening to me: close-up pictures are created, but not those portraying landscapes, making this bug quite puzzling and disturbing, since I am a professional photographer specialized in landscapes and having a dedicated site.

From what I can infer, when information data to be processed becomes large, it seems to overwhelm processing capacity of phone and we have some type of crash. It is however mysterious why system was just working perfectly before update and what 18.0 did to mess it up, therefore I suspect only a new update could undo the problem, where 18.0.1 did not succeed.

Additionally, now I can't download my photos off of my iPhone. I normally plug it in with a USB cord, export the photos to my computer, and then delete them off my phone to save space. But when I plug in my phone to my computer (Windows OS) it doesn't show any folders for photos in the file explorer.

iPhone version iOS 18.0.1

This is pretty bad as far as a bug in the system. My phone is used 50% for photos in RAW, and not being able to take photos or download them isn't good.

I share identical problem, also aggravated by the trouble encountered in downloading iTunes on my laptop (I finally succeeded only thanks to a link provided to me by an Indian guy in Microsoft support) and by the impossibility to have my phone recognized by ITunes itself. I am also a professional photographer, like another member posting in this section, and RAW is essential for me and main reason for using an IPhone, so I ask anyone in the forum and Apple itself to help!

There is another observation I would like to share: following deletion of all pictures which had gone black after shooting (in order to free memory space) I noticed that an unaccounted amount of 10 gigabytes space was left occupied in phone and there was no way to have it restored, in spite of the several manouvers suggested by support.

I suspect that as corrupted files are not readable, also they become not erasable, only to aggravate problem.

This is another issue demanding a prompt solution
