iCloud Photos uploading over mobile data when they shouldn’t.

Should photos upload to icloud even with low data mode turned on? Is this a new thing in ios 18? I know that before the icloud sync would stop when I disconnected from wifi and continue every time I connected. It never uploaded anything though mobile data. Now (after updating to ios 18) it happenes all the time that it just decides to upload all my photos to icloud even on data and because i shoot a lot of video (through the filmic pro app - so very big files) it drained all my data multiple times. I haven’t found any switch in the settings to change this so i had to deny the app’s access to data usage, which also means i can’t view photos while I’m on data. I first thought it’s a bug on the ios 18 beta but after updating to the public release, it seems like it’s a normal thing now.

Is there something I’m missing? Is there a way to turn the icloud sync off?

I also noticed when I wanted to download a playlist on Apple Music, i started downloading it on wifi but went away for a moment just to find out it kept downloading even after disconnecting from the wifi, downloaded the whole playlist and drained like 8 GB. This never happened before ios 18 with low data mode on.

Even with optimizing you can see the lower res images on device, the high res just won’t load. As to low data mode, if you’re actively in the photo app it should still use data but may indicate that sync is paused, you can also pause it. In the background, syncing is paused but active apps should continue to function normally; that’s my understanding.

Thanks for replying. I wrote that I’ve done it already. It’s not the solution because now I can’t view any photos and videos while on data except for the new ones (i have the “optimize storage” feature turned on) The question was more about whether it’s a new thing in ios 18 that no one informed us about or it’s a bug (an important one imo) - I think it’s the latter. Turning low data mode on and off on ios 17 and older always affected icloud syncing on mobile data and now it seems like it doesn’t, the sync is on all the time.
