Freeform keeps drawing (annoying) boxes around my writing

I'm using the latest Freeform. Handwriting recognition is turned off.

When I write, Freeform sometimes puts dotted boxes around some of the writing. Sometimes red. Sometimes blue. I see no pattern. I don't know what it's doing and, frankly, I can't imagine it's anything that I want it to do.

How do I make it stop? It's really distracting.

"New Features" when introduced in a major version upgrade (such as updating an iPad from iPadOS 17.x to iPadOS 18) tend to be enabled by default...

While purely objective speculation, given Apple's mantra and desire to "surprise and delight", enabling new functionality by initial default is perhaps to ensure that new capabilities are quickly discovered by the User (as you have) - after which you may tailor your device settings to your preference. Once set, settings will remain as you set them.

In this instance, new Freeform functionality has been encountered/discovered and explored - and in your case, now disabled. 🙂
