After upgrading to iOS 18, CarPlay is crashing randomly

After upgrading to iOS 18, CarPlay is randomly crashing my entire infotainment system. It has happened trying to adjust settings in CarPlay, replying to a message, creating a new message, sending messages. I'm also not receiving popup notifications on the screen unless I have CarPlay open. This makes the application completely unusable and makes me want to switch to Android Auto. I need to be able to send/receive messages hands free while I'm driving for my job.

UPDATE So I did everything recommended in this thread and nothing worked. The only solution that worked was to go to my Mazda dealer and have them update the Mazda Connect software. I just did it today. Cost me $87.50 😐 but now the problem is fixed. I can now text or do any voice commands without it crashing.

Lexus dealer installed update on 2021 350 ES entertainment system and No More Problem! Finally. The version I had on the car was #1730 and Lexus update version was 1805. There was no charge. My problem involved making phone calls--I had to use the speaker phone function on the phone for anyone to hear me as I drove. I could hear them through the CarPlay but they could not hear me. It is working now.

I talked to my local Mazda dealer the other day. The guy was not completely sure if the update would fix it. He said "for 8 out of 10 people we do the update and don't hear back. Some people continue to have problems". But since it is about a half hour fix and less than $100, I will make an appointment and see what happens

@Arch505 -- you're asking the right questions. To the best of my knowledge, Mazda hasn't released a software update since iOS 18 was released in Sept., so I don't see how updating the Mazda software would address whatever the conflict is that's specific to iOS 18. Again, we run two different iPhones in our car: my wife's iPhone 15 Pro with iOS 17 continues to have no issues with CarPlay. My 16 Pro with iOS 18 has the crashing issue and 18.2 hasn't resolved it.

It doesn’t happen in my boyfriend’s 2016 Silverado or my daughter’s 2017 Trax. However, it’s gotten worse in my 2019 Colorado ZR2 since I first updated. Now I can’t use Waze (the system immediately crashes and reboots every time) and I can’t change any CarPlay settings through the app without it crashing. I brought my truck to my dealership and they said it appears I may need a replacement radio receiver. Thankfully I paid for EPP and only owe the $100 deductible for this. Will get it replaced next week and check back in with an update.

Identical issue with my 2020 CX-5 Signature, using a 16 Pro running 18.1. CarPlay quits right after using Siri to text or call a number. It does, fortunately, send the text or make the call before quitting. Then I have to unplug, replug, and CarPlay works fine again until I use Siri to text or call. I'm not sure if this bug is consistent with all Siri-activated commands, such as requesting a specific album on Apple Music. I've been using CarPlay in this vehicle for over 4 years and never had this issue until the new phone and iOS 18. My wife has a 15 Pro that's still running the latest version of iOS 17 and there are no issues with CarPlay.

Upgraded to iOS 18.2 yesterday, which I hoped would finally resolve this iOS 18 issue, but no luck. CarPlay still crashing in my 2020 Mazda CX-5 after any Siri request. My wife's iPhone 15 Pro, still running iOS 17, has no problem in the same car. Voice Shortcuts has always been toggled off on my iPhone, so that's not a fix, at least not for me. This issue unfortunately turns CarPlay into a "hands on" interface, which is really unsafe when driving.

Apple? Mazda? Somebody please fix this.

The most recent Mazda infotainment upgrade is version 74.00.324A. This is considered the final update for the original Mazda Connect system and supports CarPlay and Android Auto

  • It's important to note that this firmware version is region-specific:74.00.324A NA N for North America (USA, Canada, Mexico)
  • 74.00.324A EU N for Europe and UK
  • 74.00.324A 4A N (ADR) for Australia, NZ, Middle East, Thailand, South Africa, Oceania

For newer Mazda models (2021-2024), there are different firmware versions available, such as 7000C0A-NA06_12018 for 2021-2023 CX-30/Mazda3 and 7000C0A-NA12_10016 for 2024 CX-5.

In the 3 months since I first posted to this thread, the crashing in my 2020 Mazda CX-5 gradually stopped happening over time, to the point that it hasn’t crashed at all in a couple of weeks no matter what I’ve asked of Siri. I wish I could say I did something that fixed it, but I didn’t, other than installing new iOS updates when available to my iPhone 16 Pro. It’s only within the last month or so that the crashing noticeably slowed. Up til then, any Siri request to play something on Apple Music was a guaranteed crash. Now that doesn’t happen. While I’m happy that the crashing has become a rarity, it is annoying when a problem like this never has an identified cause or fix. In terms of the various “fixes” that have been posted here, they either didn’t work for me or my settings already matched what was being proposed as a fix and it didn’t help.

Both my wife and I just got the new iPhone 16pro with iOS 18.0.1 now installed, and Apple CarPlay will suddenly quit when we use Siri to make text messages or phone calls. We have to unplug the iPhone and plug it back in and then it usually works. We're both using the standard 1m USB-C Apple white braided cable that came with the phone. The cars are 2018 Mazda CX-5 and a 2017 Mazda 3. No VPN running, and we restart the phones everyday.

Thank you for posting this. Same issue with our 2019 Mazda CX-5. My wife and I both have iPhone 15 Pros and both running on iOS 18.0.1. This started happening when we upgraded to iOS 18.0. CarPlay crashes when we are using Maps and we have an active route AND when we are on a phone call. We haven't noticed any other situation that causes it to crash. I reported a bug on the Feedback app but of course have heard nothing from Apple.

I have similar problems on my 16 Pro Max. I drive a Renault Arkana 2023. When I use CarPlay after my latest iOS update the phone app doesn't work and neither does Siri. Tried different cables with the same result. I can listen to Apple Music, Spotify and such apps. It's just phone calls and Siri that doesn't work. Other iPhones without the latest update work fine. In my work I drive a VW ID4 and there are no issues there. Phone works, Siri works...
