Trying to edit a photo in Sequoia's Photos app--brand new machine, just installed two days ago, iMac--and nothing will save. It will always revert. Of course this is my 87 year old father's machine and he uses exactly two apps--Photos and Mail. We've rebooted, etc. etc.
Perhaps a known new operating system issue that a patch is to fix?
Or somebody has a fix?

I am facing the same problem after the update to Sequoia.
The workaround that I am using that has solved the problem for me is to convert the pictures to JPEG using the built-in utility in the finder before the import to photos app.
I select all the pictures in the folder, right click, quick actions, convert image, convert to JPEG.
If I import to the photos app the converted files (virtually equal to the original ones) everything works fine for me.
Maybe this workaround can fix the problem also for you while we wait for updates.
Well we gave up, wiped the machine, didn't upgrade to Sequoia, re-did the migration, and all works just fine now. Of course I believe it is the update to Sequoia and Photos. For now, we're staying in Sonoma
That sounds crazy! I have an M3pro MacBook Pro, and I have no such problems with Photos. If you have tried booting into Safe Mode and the other things I suggested earlier, and it's still not working, I'd call Apple Support or go to an Apple Store to see what they suggest.
I reported this to Apple today - they didnt know about the problem.
For me personally I can edit screenshots or photos taken with my camera but not with my Android phone (Samsung or google pixel pro) - get error message that edits cannot be saved, or no error message, everything looks ok and go back to the photo and the simple edits eg crop, straighten etc were not saved
this goes for new photos since the upgrade or older photos too
has anyone found a solution to this problem
I have the same issues. I am working with photos I took two weeks ago, and only imported them to a newly released MacBook Pro. So these particular photos were not on my old device. There is probably something wrong with the retrieval/save system that Apple needs to fix in the Photos library.

What kind of synchronizing are you referring to? Are you using iCloud Photos?
If yes, are your edited photos in a Shared iCloud Photos Library?

Have you tried to launch Photos by hitting the Photos application icon in the Applications folder?
The Dock icon may be linked to a different version of Photos on a backup drive.

Photos libraries must be stored on APFS or MacOS Extended (GUID) case insensitive formatted disks (with the default "Ignore ownership on this volume" ON). I am having the same issues with photo edits reverting to original. The same with unnamed faces I will add the name and it will instantly revert to unnamed, or won't let me even try to name. Creating groups just sits there, there is no way to ignore unwanted faces, when naming new photos 1/2 the time you have to create a new name for one that is already existing, then merge the folders. I am getting increasingly frustrated with photos. I should also say that I am not hooked into the cloud.
Upgraded to Sequoia a week ago. Now can save edited photos. ??

I boasted too early. If I try to edit the edited Sequoia picture (from OneDrive), it reverts to the un-edited version. If I edit a picture saved in an older OS, it works fine. Very frustrating.
