AirPrint not working after iOS 18.0.1 update

After updating my iPhone 14 Pro from iOS 17.x.x to iOS 18.0.1 the AirPrint apps is not working with my Canon i-Sensys MF217w still reported to be supported by the new iOS version.

This printer works correctly if I print:

  • from my MACBook with MacOS Monterey 12.7.6
  • from another iPhone 11 running iOS 17

After trying to print a simple Note (with title "Modèle" for example containing a "grid"), I cannot see the AirPrint list and the printing never comes out or suddenly a new error message appears suggesting Retry or Open printing list . If I select "Open printing list" (see screen capture) in spite of observing my page in the printing list, printing never occurs.

Il have also tried to reboot:

  • my router
  • my printer
  • my iPhone 14 Pro

More details: ( the firmware of my Canon printer says : Main controller Ver 04.15 ; Boot Rom Ver 04.01; DCON Ver 00.09

I have no possibility to update this firmware because Canon does not provide a firmware update for MacOS Monterey 12.7.6 64 bits). And remember that everything worked fine with iOS 17 and from other devices not running iOS18.

Do you expect a new Update of iOS 18 to solve this problem or is this specific to my hardware configuration, not so obsolete after all ?

I hear from Reddit and also Apple community that other users experienced a similar problem.

SOLUTION: Printing on Canon MF217w from iOS 18.xxx

One month and a half after posting this request for help regarding the impossibly to print to my CANON MF217w laser printer from iOS 18.xxx (iPhone XIV) but still working on macOS, I now have have a provisionnal acceptable solution as follow:

1/ be aware that the traditional Canon Print app (old drivers) is now obsolete and replaced by an updated Canon Print app with modified logo.

This new app should be urgently downloaded from App Store.

Remove the old one. It seems that the Canon engineers have discovered an incompatibility with the old version.

2/ having downloaded the new Canon Print version it seems that the Apple Airprint app (despite Apple claims of so called MF217w supported, which is still not the case !) still doesn’t work ; you may now print from iOS 18.xxx using the following procedure:

— start the printing process as usual as if you were using AirPrint

do not OK the printing

— instead, share with another app (by selecting the small square icon with upper arrow) namely the newly updated Canon Print app as a destination

— use then Canon Print to print your document by confirming “Follow” (“Suivant” en français) after having selected your MF217w printer .

The printing is very fast and this procedure request only two more steps.

Let’s hope that the Apple engineers will soon modify Airprint (MF217w supported ?) to take care of the new Canon drivers.

Hope this helps ! Best ….

The Canon MG5320 is listed as a supported AirPrint model in About AirPrint - Apple Support (en-us edition, November 19, 2024). This means that printing ought to be possible without additional software under the latest iOS versions, provided that the printer is connected to the same network (Wi-Fi router) as the iPhone.

Use AirPrint to print from your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

After checking all settings/connections, you may want to try a full power-cycle sequence (do not forget the Wi-Fi router):

  • Power off the Wi-Fi router, the printer, the iPhone, and all other devices/computers.
  • Wait two to three minutes.
  • Power on the router.
  • Wait two to three minutes.
  • Power on the printer.
  • Wait a minute or two.
  • Power on the iPhone, and all other devices/computers.

Also, check whether a printer firmware update has been made available by Canon.

Thanks for posting this. I was able to manually add my MF216N printer to the new Canon Print app, and can print while using the app. But when I follow all your guide, I get an error at the final step in print preview “No printer has been added. Start PRINT, add a printer, and then try again.” However, as stated above, my printer has been added to the app and it works. Same problem with both iPhone 16 Pro/18.2.1 and iPad 10/18.2

Any ideas? Thanks

See Musicam below and his reference to network parameters and manually input the ip address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

If you get that done, I was thinking someone couldn’t find how to print to the app and wondering if this helps?: first press the square with up arrow. Next screen press the print with the printer icon next to it. Next screen press square with up arrow. Next screen in the second row which has apps you can slide over and see the Canon Print App. Press that and it flys off to the printer. At least for me it does.

hope that helps.

UPDATE 18.2 installed on iPhone 13 but DID NOT fix printer issue with Canon Pixma MG5320.

I select print, next to Printer, it says “No Printer Selected”, click here and it says “looking for printers” with spinning star. It finds “Canon MG5300 Series”, I select it, the star spins briefly then screen changes and message “No Printer Selected” appears.

Exactly as before 18.2 update.

iOS 18.2.1

Default iOS Air Print function works w/MF216N, but only with native Apple apps (Notes, Numbers, etc) not with PDFs, for example. Still have the problem where I was able to successfully aquire the printer in the new Canon Print app, but when I chose it (over default print option), Canon Print app shows error no printer selected. Weird. I can, however, download a PDF and print it no problem via the Canon Print app, ie not via air print(ish). Not ideal.

You may want to set Sort By to Oldest. The reply will appear at the end, but this setting is at least logical (and chronological).
