Please Help.... My computer has been repaired by Apple FIVE times since I purchased it in March 2023. It is now broken for the sixth time, and my warranty has expired.

I have a 2022 MacBook Air with the M2 chip, and overall, it has worked well. However, my charger has failed for the SIXTH time. In my previous five visits to the Apple Store Genius Bar, the employees couldn't identify the root cause of the issue. Typically, they would replace the charging cable, and they have also changed the adapter and the duckhead. However, after a couple of weeks, it would start flashing orange and then stop working altogether.

Approximately 3.5 months ago, an employee decided the MagSafe charging board needed to be replaced. At that time, my warranty had expired, and I had firmly explain that this was a manufacturing issue and I should not be responsible for the cost considering the number of repairs that occurred during my warranty period. They complied and covered the cost. Well.. MY CHARGER STOPPED WORKING AGAIN.

I'm unsure what to do at this point. Given my history with this computer, it's clear that it's faulty, and I don’t want to spend own money to fix the same issue, only to have it happen again.

One of my organization's M-series laptops developed a charging issue when using the MagSafe 3 charging cable. It would work fine when using a USB-C charging cable. The Logic Board had failed & had to be replaced. I've seen a few other reports on this forum regarding MagSafe3 charging issues of the M-series Macs which also require replacement of the Logic Board (it is odd, but not enough to be significantly meaningful yet).

If I were you, I would contact Apple corporate to report your experience. You can also check your local consumer protection laws, although that may be more difficult if you have moved, but it may still be worth investigating your options.

Getting the LogicBoard Replaced:

A. A Bit of a Story:

During the days of COVID, I had to send in my 2017 15" MBP 11 times, due to a loose connection between the LogicBoard and the screen. Being an absolutely defective device(nothing on my part), and patient, Apple gave me a free $2,500 USD upgrade, for just the price of the AppleCare+. I purchased with it. Were I not so patient, they would have charged me $2,500 USD.

B. Restore your Mac from a Backup:

Did you ever back up your Mac prior to all of this? If so export what need be onto an external drive, and then restore your Mac from the backup. If not, then take this as a learning experience, knowing to always backup your Mac, that way your can have something to restore your old Mac’c data from, should anything go wrong such as this.

[…]I might have been more forgiving, but I rely on my computer nearly every day, and they've had to take it in for overnight repairs. Did you have to pay for any of the 11 repairs?

No. I did not have to pay for any repairs.

Screen flickering was the issue in that case. It occurred after a Catalina update install, The days of COVID required send-in for servicing, as my local stores were closed for months, and then only opened for oh so little hours of the day. It took just under a year until Apple provided a new Mac. 100 hours of over-the-phone support and my commitment to troubleshooting it on my end of the phone call probably is what got Apple forgiving.

Some thoughts for troubleshooting…

Screensharing with the Apple Rep:

To easily prove something to Apple while troubleshooting with them over-the-phone, screenshare the camera of a mobile device and/or that of your Mac. Ask a friend, or family member if you may use their phone or Mac, if you do not have one handy.

This response gives me some hope. As a part-time employee and a full-time nursing student, I bought my computer just before starting the program. I was a bit frustrated during my last visit to the Genius Bar. I might have been more forgiving, but I rely on my computer nearly every day, and they've had to take it in for overnight repairs.
