How to silent an Airtag?

Hello, I am trying to have my child bring a airtag with him to school because he doesn't have a phone. I think the airtag makes a noise when the tag is not near you for a certain amount of time. I am scare that the airtag would start making noise while he is in school/class. Is there a way to silent it when he is in school? Does anyone know how long you have before it start making noises when the tag is not near the phone? Thank you.

One potential option is to configure the option to not have the AirTag to not "Notify When Left Behind" when it is in certain locations. You would do so with the Find My app on your iPhone, by going to: Find My > Items tab > select the particular AirTag > then select the location of the school.

However, that will still not resolve two other issues:

  1. When separated from your iPhone, it will start beeping anywhere from 8 to 24 hrs afterwards. There is no way to disable this.
  2. Anyone with an iPhone at the school, will get an alert that there is an AirTag nearby ... or potentially following them.

It's important to understand that Apple did not design the AirTag for tracking ... either people or pets. If your goal is to keep track of your child, you may want to consider getting a dedicated GPS tracker instead.
