FCPX Spinning Beachball Stuck Frozen

Final Cut Pro X freezes every few operations for a while.

My solution:

  1. Create new LIBRARY
  2. Drag (copy) over all the necessary EVENTS from the old LIBRARY
  3. Leave complex clips (in my case a multicam clip) behind
  4. Close old LIBRARY

Good luck

There is very little anyone can do without information.

We don't even know what mac, what drives are used, what OS, what version of FCP.

Many people work in FCP with complex libraries. Maybe yours got corrupted somehow, or maybe - as often happens - there is a problem with a third party daemon or agent that affects FCP.

If you want to troubleshoot more thoroughly and maybe prevent future similar accidents: Please run Etrecheck and post its full report here. Use the "additional text" button and paste the report into the text box.

Seven posts from the thousands of FCP users doesn't seem like a prevalence. Some of those posts show that providing an Etrecheck report helped the user to solve their issue. Some didn't report back after the advice so I like to think positively and assume it was fixed. :) From incorrectly formatted disks, to the evil Chrome keystone daemons, to incompatible 3rd party software, there are some common things that can cause FCP to become unhappy.

If you'd like another set of eyes on your setup, there are some very experienced FCP editors here.

The spinning color wheel is a high-level indicator, and does not correspond to a specific problem. It simply means something has gone wrong which prevents the FCP main thread from servicing the UI within a period of time.

This can be caused by a third-party plugin, insufficient disk space, the Chrome browser, a failing disk drive, etc.

No user should try copying over events to another library as the first step upon seeing the "spinning wheel" symptom. It should be methodically investigated, which includes gathering specific information and examining the diagnostic logs from the Console app. Another useful method is doing OPT>Help>Gather App Diagnostics and posting that somewhere we can study it.
