Touch ID greyed out in system settings (iMac M1)

Just the other day I noticed that the Touch ID from my iMac M1 (Sequoia 15.0.1) does not seem to work anymore.

When i open the system settings of Thouch ID, all the slider/buttons are greyed out. The only thing i can do is remove the existing fingerprints.

I already read If Touch ID isn't working on your Mac - Apple Support, tried rebooting the mac, turning off and on the keyboard, connect it with the usb-c cable, booting the mac in safe mode and performed a hardware diagnostic.

None of these things helped, although at one or two moments, de sliders/buttons were activated again (blue) at one point, but us soon as i clicked on 'add a fingerprint' or changed out a slider, all sliders went greyed out again and was not able to change anything anymore.

Am I left with the option of failing hardware?

Yeah, I read that article. I couldn't even try al those steps because all options are greyed out....

I fiddled around a bit more today and found a solution.

I removed the existing fingerprints (that was actually the only thing i could do or change in this menu) and after that the whole touch id section disappeared. As per last chance I rebooted the mac one more time (just normally, no safe mode or so), opened up touch id in the settings app and the touch id menu section reappeared. Quickly I clicked on 'add a finger'....... which worked! First it asked me to double click the on-off button of the iMac to establish a secured connection (I guess the keyboard was connected wireless again at that moment) and after that I was able to configure some more fingerprints.

Since then it's working all day now.

I am so happy it works again. I'm still confused as to why this issue happened, but I read somewhere else that this behavior might appear when the battery of the keyboard has been depleted (can't remember that happening)
