So the previous owners of this ‘iPhone 6s’, gave this iPhone down to me, but the problem is it had a passcode and when i tried to factory reset it the activation lock screen was shown when setting up. Unfortunately the previous owners had moved away and no longer could get in contact with them. Is there any possibility Apple can assist me with this locked device?

No. Only the owner of the account used to lock it can remove the activation lock.
If you can't contact them and / or they can't / won't remove the lock, it's a brick. Recycle it.
