iPhone 16 Maps app won’t let me stop a route.

Brand new iPhone 16.

When I start a route in maps and don’t finish the route then close the app and reopen it to go to a new destination the bottom search maps section flashes a few times, the map goes full screen and doesn’t let me cancel the previous route. And the window that say end route doesn’t appear.

The only way to be able to start a new route is to drive to the first route. This obviously is not an option.

How do I fix this ?

That worked. I had to exit the app, then touch & hold the icon. After doing the above, I get the option to end route. I must touch "end route." (This is turning into a host of things wrong "for me" w/ Apple Maps.)

Too many steps, especially while attempting safe driving.

There's no map settings. Not even in the phone settings for apps. (There are other choices but not for the actual map performance.

After I enter my destination, 1st in the list of routes is the longest time to get there. Of the 3 routes, it has the longest duration in bold as if that's the recommended/best way. I have to scroll up to see the other options, read the tiny lettering underneath after find my reading glasses to use for 10 seconds.

Of the initial route options, the longest duration is also in bold on the map at the top of the screen as if that's the recommended/best way. (Google is doing this too. So I've been trying Apple Maps again.)

Can't set a default for fastest time, tolls, 2-D vs 3-D, N always N, etc. Of the possible routes, the longest one is first in the list.

I can't choose 2-D map. 3-D maps my scramble brain when I'm trying to navigate traffic and find my street number on the buildings. There are so many moving objects around me, (pedestrians/cars/pan handlers standing too far into the road/ KIDS PLAYING, chasing balls or each other into the street!/CYCLISTS!). Then this thing goes 3-D when I'm not expecting it to while I'm looking for a street# and looking at the map at the same time. I have to take one hand off of the steering wheel to try to make the map orientation go back to the way it was. It's dangerous! Granted, I'm ADHD, but all map apps should take people like me into consideration. I get motion disorientation/sick (not pukey) easily. If I'm sitting parked and the map goes 3-D, I feel like I'm moving for a sec, thinking it's a car parked next to me. It always takes me aback. Kinda like vertigo. (I tried to upload screenshots but the files must be too big.)

What started all of this whining is, I was looking for another map app because of my experience w/ Apple Maps. Now, I'm sure I wasted an hour.

SOLUTION HERE: turn your phone to landscape view and you will see the x appear again.

Yes, this is extremely annoying and buggy behavior. I think it must be a recent patch because I don't recall having this trouble before a few months ago. I just figured this out sitting on my bed at home but when I have been driving around and needed to change my destination it was stressful to say the least.
