Why does SOS appear on my iPhone 16 Pro Max and is 'turn on this line' needed on Wi-Fi?

My new iPhone 16 pro max had the SOS on the upper right-hand corner this morning. I tried everything from turning the phone on and off to turning off the wifi connection then turning it back on but couldn't get it the SOS to turn off. Only when I turned on the "turn on this line" feature did the SOS go away. My question is, is the "turn on this line" supposed to stay on even when I'm on wifi?

Yes, that line is your cellular service connection. It should stay on all the time. When you have a Wi-Fi connection that takes precedence over the cellular connection for most things, but not for phone calls, visual voicemail, SMS messaging and MMS messaging, all of which require a cellular network.

SOS means that your phone is working, but not connected to your cellular network provider, but, by law, all carriers in range are required to take emergency calls whether you have an account with them or not. And SOS always uses cellular connections, never Wi-Fi.
