MacBook Pro Draining Battery in Sleep Mode – Not Entering Proper Sleep?

Hello everyone, I'm experiencing an issue with my MacBook Pro 2017 15-inch where it doesn't seem to enter proper sleep mode. Here's what happens:

When I close the lid or manually put it to sleep via the Apple logo, the screen turns off, and it appears to go into sleep mode.

However, the MacBook remains active in the background, and the battery drains significantly, going from 100% to 0% within 8–10 hours.

The Activity Monitor doesn't show any apps or processes that could be keeping it awake.

The battery functions normally during regular use, so it doesn't appear to be a battery health issue.

Has anyone encountered this issue before? What could be causing my MacBook to stay awake in sleep mode, and how can I fix this? Thank you!

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 14.7

Here's the report.

Thank you!

You don’t have anything like a “clean MacOS install” as you have all kinds of software running:

dortania.opencore-legacy-patcher – used to run new MacOS on unsupported older Mac hardware. You have a 2016 15-inch Macbook Pro and its highest supported MacOS is Monterey 12.7.6 yet you are running Sonoma 14.7.2 that is unsupported, with such a hacked up set up, all bets are off and you can expect many things not to work normally.

CloudWarp – this appears to be some sort of VPN-like tool (maybe running in the background)

Downie 4 – a special downloader app (maybe running in the background)

You have also turned off the built in MacOS protection System Integrity Protection.

You have notifications coming in from Whatsapp (maybe in the background)

You also have many crashes in the background. I am not surprised that your Mac is not sleeping properly. With what you have done to it, you can probably expect all kinds of anomalies. Apple does not permit troubleshooting of unsupported and hacked setups like yours in the Discussions. If you want the Mac to behave normally, completely erase and format it and do a real clean install of the latest supported MacOS (Monterey).

@steve626 is absolutely correct, you are not testing a clean install of macOS. If you perform a clean install of macOS and restore from a backup or install third party software....you no longer are testing a clean install. You've just brought all the problems back onto your system.

You have customized PRAM Settings which I have never seen before, so I have no idea how it may affect the system. Also, the Open Core Legacy Patcher could be the part of the problem as well as running an OS that is not supported by Apple on a 2016 laptop.

In fact it gets worse, we can no longer discuss your problem because you have hacked your system to run an unauthorized version of macOS....it is against the forum's Terms of Service. You have to expect issues when running such a configuration.

If you reinstall macOS 12.x Monterey which is the last officially supported version of macOS and you continue to have issues, then we can resume this discussion.

Edit: Actually reinstalling macOS 12.x Monterey will most likely fix your problem as long as you also perform a PRAM Reset.

It is probably due to some third party software you have installed. Another possibility is cloud file syncing services including iCloud.

You can use the third party app EtreCheck and post the complete report here so we can examine it for possible clues.

If you can leave the power adapter connected, then do so.

the quickest work-around is to connect the power adapter when you set it down in one place.

In general, you should ALWAYS connect a power source when it is possible to do so, and only run on batteries (which could be somewhat slower) when no power sources are at hand. Your Mac maintains its battery charge levels under program control, and your Mac will NEVER over-charge

hi, I new to community. But just a suggestion hope it helps. Just Quit all active apps before putting it to sleep. All maintenance will be done and it won't burden the system as other apps won't be consuming any more power.

I always close all my apps on iPhone and even on iPad If I m not using it. it saves battery. same I do with my MacBook Pro.

Do try what I m suggesting if it works do let me know.
