Check with your carrier to ensure that you have SMS provisioned on your iPhone. The carrier controls SMS and that is the kind of message you would get from a non-iPhone. The carrier has to make sure you can receive them.

See if their colors correspond to this: Read this document about iMessage (blue), RCS (green) and SMS/MMS (also green) text messages --> What is the difference between iMessage, RCS, and SMS/MMS? - Apple Support

- iMessage = blue bubble. This is message sent between Apple devices only, over WiFi or cellular-data.

- Text Message = green bubble. These are 'regular' text messages (SMS) or a text+media messages (MMS) sent over a cellular text-messaging plan (note it says "Text Message" at the top). These can communicate between Apple mobile devices and non-Apple phones. RCS (Rich Communication Services) is a newer variant of this.

If you see it is one particular kind, in particular SMS, then you need to contact your carrier about those. To see the version of carrier settings on your device, tap Settings > General > About and look next to Carrier. To see additional carrier information, tap the version number.
