Unable to sync iPhone and iMac Calendar for months

I'm running an iPhone 12 mini running os 17.7 since this summer when the difficulty began. My iMac is iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015) running 12.7.6 which is the most recent os which supports this iMac. From what I have been able to glean from random attempts over recent months, it may be that os 17.7 is not compatible with the iMac 's os. What can I do about this? My newer iPad is able to sync calendars with the os 17.7; the other is older, running os 15.x. I have worked over several months to limit iCloud sharing of files and other data in order to free calendars and contacts to run on this.

There is one other wrinkle and I don't see an option to select. The iPhone says the calendars (I have about a dozen categories) are only on the iPhone, basically only a couple of items. When I update the iMac calendar, there are no changes to the iPhone calendar and it doesn't indicate it has access to the cloud nor to the iMac through a wifi sync nor a direct cable. This seems to have become unwieldy: I'm considering an analog solution because I need a portable calendar for appointments. I also miss my Palm.

After having gone through this, also consulting Apple, I finally found, rummaging around in the iphone Settings, some redundant place in an iCloud setting. This was at the top of the settings, not specifically iCloud but at the top with my name, apple id, etc. I think what confused me was the nomenclature, iCloud+ and I had been looking mostly on my iMac.

  • Went to Apple ID
  • Went to iCloud+
  • Went to Apps using iCloud, Show All
  • Went to iCal, which was "off"
  • Turned on ICal; went back to Settings, closed it and reopened
  • ICal had changed to iCloud Calendar and calendar items on my iMac now appeared on my iCal app in the iPhone.

I think some of what is strange about this problem is that Apple support from Apple was unable to help me, and I was very confused by the designation iCloud+ . I looked it up in the "Help" setting of iMac, and it was mixed with pictures or icons and other brief idiosyncratic phrases which made no sense to me.

Having used Apple products for a while, and abandoning DOS and Microsoft for the over complex steps to dfunction over 30 years ago, I would hope this reconciliation would be simpler, or the solution easy to find. I'm not sure what triggered this adjustment after updating the phone to OS 17, but it does seem as though things happen as a result of updates. I'm noting this for myself as well as others who have clearly had similar problems.
