Locked iPhone 12 purchased through a third party seller in Germany

My IPhone 12, purchased through a third party seller in Germany, is locked. I did everything according to the instructions, sent the IMEI and received the request number, then inserted a new card into the device, but again I got a message that device is owned by ATT and remote management is required. I would like to ask for more help.

If it says that it's owned by AT&T, that's a completely different situation than that it's locked to AT&T as a cell carrier. If it says that it's owned by AT&T and that it's being managed remotely, then either it wasn't prepared properly for resale or it was stolen. In either case, you cannot use it and should try to get your money back.

So, it sounds like the device was an AT&T device, remotely managed by AT&T for an employee. The device was stolen from AT&T employee and eventually reported as lost and AT&T locked the device.


Why so long? Employee’s don’t always report devices stolen right away. Then times can pass until it’s locked. Sometimes it requires the iPhone iOS be updated and then it is locked. The managed device unlock can work until the iOS is updated.


Apple, as a a manufacturer of iPhones, assigns the IMEI number to each device. However they do not have the key to unlock the device. More than likely, the AT&T IT support team locked the device. They’ll need to unlock the iPhone.
