Error -50 while copying Windows files from NTFS to APFS drive on iMac
I have copied all my data files from my soon to be retired PC onto a USB drive formatted with NTFS. I can see and browse all the many files on my iMac and my PC once attached to either just fine. Good, so I know my data is safe.
Now I just want to copy the data files to a APFS formatted SSD drive so that: 1) I can use them on my Mac and, 2) so that they will be included in my Time Machine backup. I can for sure use them from this NTFS drive ... I've already tried for some obvious file formats (e.g. Office 365 files), but Time Machine doesn't include NTFS drives.
There are WAY too many folders and directories to go file by file or even folder by folder. And I went into this knowing there might be some files from the PC for which the source program wouldn't be available on the Mac. What ever, it's fine. I'll live. All I really need are my data files (personal text files, pics, videos, Office 365, obvious stuff).
When copying from the NTFS formatted USB drive to the APFS SSD I keep getting the error: 'The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50).'
Now, when doing bulk copies on Windows, if the OS comes across a file that can't be copied for what ever reason (privs, it's opened, locked, etc.) you are given the option to skip it and/or the full set of files with the same problem.
With this, it's just fails.
What can i do?
Sure, I can continue to use the data on this NTFS formatted drive, but again then I don't get the benefit of having them all backed up with Time Machine.
And, as I said, individual copying files is not possible and going folder by folder will be a last resort.
Any thoughts?
Could it be a APFS thing? Should I format the SSD in OS Extended format??
Thanks!!
