Keyboard and touchpad stopped working. Macbook Air is extremely slow.

I'm experiencing some issues with my MacBook Air and would appreciate any help. Here’s what happened:

  1. The Mac was left on overnight until the battery fully drained (watching some TV Series).
  2. The next day, I turned it on and started using it as usual.
  3. Suddenly, the keyboard and trackpad stopped working. The system seemed frozen, but it wasn’t completely unresponsive.
  4. I forced a shutdown and restarted, but the issue persisted.
  5. Now, every time I turn on the Mac, the fan runs at maximum speed, even when the laptop is cool and there are no heavy processes running.
  6. The performance is extremely slow without any clear reason.
  7. The keyboard and trackpad work intermittently—sometimes they respond, other times they don’t.

I’ve tried restarting multiple times, but the problem remains. Has anyone experienced something similar or has suggestions for troubleshooting and possible fixes?

Thanks in advance!

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 12.7

NOTE: This report was generated in Safe mode.

> 8GB RAM is limiting. Nothing to be done about that.

> Disable the always-running state of Malwarebytes if it's enabled. Unnecessary. Run the occasional manual scan.

> Disable or uninstall the Fortinet VPN. Typical VPNs are not as secure as they claim and VPNs in general often are implicated in poor performance. Unless required by employer or school or bank, best to disable.

> uTorrent app hang. Uninstall. Torrent apps invite malware.

> Drive write/read speeds are low. (451/481 MB/s) Should be much higher with that SSD. 600s maybe. Consider replacing.

Suggest you get and run DriveDX disk diagnostic against that SSD. Suspect the drive is failing or has some corruption.

Yeah, so the same observations as above with this report.

Note that the drive speeds are reduced on this run.

I suspect the drive is compromised and failing.

The reports indicate TBW is at 182.30 TB written and 596 unsafe shutdowns. While the report still says 100% health on the SSD, I suspect that's inaccurate.

EDIT - I just saw your post re: DriveDX. 👍🏽

Given that info, I'd start by uninstalling the VPN and Malwarebytes, WhatsApp and the uTorrent apps. Then run another Etrecheck eval and see what's reported.

You might also consider reinstall the OS. This can be done without deleting your user data. Simply restart in Recovery mode and select Reinstall macOS. Don't erase or partition or format, just do a reinstall. This will lay down all fresh OS files. Perhaps there's some corruption that needs to be repaired.

If a simple reboot of your Mac doesn’t fix things, see if the problem still happens in safe mode.

How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Safe mode will often correct weird software behavior by forcing the OS to do disk repair, clear caches and other housekeeping and temporarily disables third-party mods. When you're in safe boot, the machine won’t be at its best performance, especially with graphics, but that's expected.

Does the same thing happen while in Safe mode?

You can exit safe mode by restarting your Mac normally, then reevaluate the problem.

Please tell us which Mac, model and year you’re having trouble with.

This could be a hardware issue, logic board perhaps.

What is the startup disk size and type, and how much free space remains?

Also, potentially an issue of conflicting software.

Please run an EtreCheck (free) evaluation of your Mac and post the generated report back here in a reply. EtreCheck is a safe and highly regarded utility from a trusted developer and respected ASC contributor. The diagnostic report will not include any personal info. It simply gathers specifics about hardware performance and installed software that might be in conflict with the OS.

Please navigate to EtreCheck.com to download utility. Be sure to Allow Full Disk Access when you install the app. Once you’ve run the app and created your report please post it with your reply to this message.

Please note – you must upload the full report. To see how, please click >  How to use Add Text when posting… EtreCheck Report.

We’ll use your EtreCheck report to look for the things that may be causing your problem and advise how to correct them.

If you're so inclined, another thing you could try is installing macOS on an external USB drive and boot from that to see how the Mac performs.

Otherwise, it might be time to schedule a visit to your local Apple Store or tech and have the computer evaluated for hardware repair. It is, after all, eight years old, and the stress of that loooong workday may have done in some critical bit.

Thanks for your help! Here’s an update on the situation:

  • The keyboard has been working fine for the past few hours.
  • The touchpad only works when I click, but it doesn’t respond to regular movement.
  • The MacBook is still extremely slow, as if it were handling an incredibly complex task that’s consuming all CPU or memory resources. However, I’m not running anything heavy.
  • The problem persists in Safe Mode.

Any further suggestions on what might be causing this? Thanks again!

EDIT: In Safe Mode the keyboard does not work.
