Opt out of Starlink coverage on iPhone?

I saw that Apple would be partnering with Starlink for satellite messaging coverage and I'd like to ensure that there is a way to opt out of this as a personal choice.

There are two separate satellite-related communications paths associated with Apple,kPhone, given the recent announcement.

There is the original out-of-coverage satellite access provided by Apple, and that coverage involves Globalstar.

There is now the recently-announced direct-to-satellite cellular, and that depends on the chosen cellular carrier and cellular plan. That includes the T-Mobile coverage (currently in beta) involving Starlink.

If you don’t want any dealing with SpaceX Starlink, then you’ll want to discuss that with T-Mobile if they’re your carrier, if (when?) the T-Mobile direct-to-satellite beta concludes with general coverage availability. Or discuss that preference with whatever other terrestrial carriers might eventually add Starlink coverage, or with whatever carriers might align with Kuiper*.

The recent announcement around Apple was the addition of Apple iPhone to the T-Mobile beta, as that beta was previously only available to Android devices.

*if and when the Kuiper constellation comes online, and if and when Kuiper then adds direct-to-satellite coverage.

If you have T-Mobile yes it is. The fact that this is all over the news and nothing from Apple is deeply disturbing. We want to opt out. Period.

Again, you are 100% wrong. And you clearly couldn't have read the link I posted, OR reading comprehension isn't your strong suit. Nowhere is it EVER suggested that even if you have T-Mobile, using Starlink is mandatory. It is OPT-IN ONLY. What part of OPT-IN ONLY do you not understand?

Regardless of opt in, your cell phone is not going to use Starlink unless it cannot see a ground station.

Your cell phone is programmed to seek and use the strongest signal source - the closest base station.

The only time your cell phone would try to use Starlink or other Satellite service (Globestar) is if you are out of cellular coverage.

Even then, you are likely only going to be able to send text messages in the case of an emergency. Don't expect that you can use your voice on a telephone call using these slow satellite connections. It is currently being used for emergency purposes.

Apple explains it here: About Messages via satellite on your iPhone - Apple Support

Apple is giving users 2 years of free usage with Globalstar service, while T-mobile is going to start charging for the Starlink service soon.

How do i opt out of Starlink on my apple devices?

Why not take a few minutes and read the thread you just posted to, where had you done so, you wouldn't have wasted your time to ask how to opt out of something you actually would have had to Opt-In to.

I do not want my iPhone in any way connected to Musk or Starlink. If opting out is not possible, I will purchase an android phone asap!

Please read the information that has been provided before posting, otherwise your post just sounds ridiculous.

  • You have to opt-in, so there is nothing for you to opt-out of.
  • Are you a T-Mobile customer? If not, you wouldn't be able to sign up for it even if you wanted to.
  • T-Mobile offered the beta to users with Android phones first, so what issue are you solving by purchasing an Android phone. And you are going to do that ASAP?

See what I mean?

So, let me ask you a question. Having the ability to connect to Starlink is no different than having the ability to connect to the cellular carrier of your choice. Starlink is a service you can choose not to use.

I choose my carrier based on multiple factors. But are any of the telecoms saints? I really don’t think so. I make choices.

If I come across an accident and have no cellular connection would I choose to save a life over not connecting to Starlink? You bet I would. It’s a choice and I’d rather have Starlink as a choice than not.

Just for the record, I cancelled my Twitter account the day he bought it. I’m no fan, but yes a service in an emergency you bet.

Also for the record, all iPhones that will be compatible with Starlink connections (14+) have had the capability to use satellite connections for Emergencies. Since Day One. Use Emergency SOS via satellite on your iPhone - Apple Support

We can help save lives without using Starlink. Do not feel the least bit like you are risking anyone’s life by NOT opting in to Starlink.

I have no interest in having starlink or anything associated with Elon Musk connected to my iPhone. If I can’t turn this feature my beloved iPhone will be changed to an android. How can I turn this feature off?

It's already on Android. And, you have to be on T-Mobile and opt in. Are you a T-Mobile customer who opted in to the satellite beta? If not, there has nothing to do with you.

You simply failed to read the information that has been provided before posting. Apple is not partnering with Musk, but T-Mobile is.

  • Do you have T-Mobile as your cellular provider?
  • Are you planning on paying an extra $15 a month to T-Mobile for that service?
  • Have you signed up for the beta on T-Mobile?
  • Are you aware that T-Mobile had already allowed the service to Android users?

Oh goody. Yet another poster who simply couldn't be bothered to read past the first post, yet decided to waste our time without any knowledge on this subject. Had you bothered to read the thread, you'd have had no reason to post in the first place. Just one post above your post is this link, which you should read --> The Starlink Myth - Apple Community

Ps: Threatening to never buy Apple products again, falls flat on this user to user only forum, which Apple doesn't read for feedback. We users don't honestly care what you buy. But if you think Android is the answer, think again, which you'd understand if you had bothered to read this thread before posting to it.

Can I opt out of Starlink

Not sure why is this so difficult for users to understand. This has been explained multiple times in this thread. Have you read any of the replies?

Once again.......You do not have Starlink. You won't have it unless you have T-Mobile and you also opt in.

Or, stated another way......you cannot opt out of a service that you do not have.

Well that was rude!!!! Please let me know how I can opt out of starlink.

You can't opt-out of something you haven't opted-in to. So you don't need to do anything. And there was nothing rude about asking what you planned to buy next. I'd love to know as well, since you clearly are not aware Android has had Starlink though T-Mobile far longer than it has been available through T-Mobile on iPhone.

Before WASTING our time trying to point out how uninformed you are, why didn't you bother to read past the first post? I'd really love an answer back from you.

Since no one bothers to read and keeps posting the same me too post, which is completely fear-based and WRONG, this clearly is important to you, right? So at least take a minute and read this, then have the gumption to come back and admit you didn't know anything before posting --> The Starlink Myth - Apple Community
