Opt out of Starlink coverage on iPhone?

I saw that Apple would be partnering with Starlink for satellite messaging coverage and I'd like to ensure that there is a way to opt out of this as a personal choice.

There are two separate satellite-related communications paths associated with Apple,kPhone, given the recent announcement.

There is the original out-of-coverage satellite access provided by Apple, and that coverage involves Globalstar.

There is now the recently-announced direct-to-satellite cellular, and that depends on the chosen cellular carrier and cellular plan. That includes the T-Mobile coverage (currently in beta) involving Starlink.

If you don’t want any dealing with SpaceX Starlink, then you’ll want to discuss that with T-Mobile if they’re your carrier, if (when?) the T-Mobile direct-to-satellite beta concludes with general coverage availability. Or discuss that preference with whatever other terrestrial carriers might eventually add Starlink coverage, or with whatever carriers might align with Kuiper*.

The recent announcement around Apple was the addition of Apple iPhone to the T-Mobile beta, as that beta was previously only available to Android devices.

*if and when the Kuiper constellation comes online, and if and when Kuiper then adds direct-to-satellite coverage.

Well, you did not read anything more than the first post, did you?

Only T-Mobile has partnered with Starlink.

You have to Opt In at T-Mobile if you want the service.

You can't Opt Out at T-Mobile if you have not first Opted In

Buy an Android? Brilliant. They already have Starlink.

Do yourself a favor and get some facts.

Starlink has partnered with a small group of select cellular carriers worldwide. Here’s the list,

T-Mobile — USA

KDDI — Japan

OPTUS — Australia

One BZ — New Zealand

Salt — Switzerland

Entel — Chile and Peru

Rodgers — Canada

Now what country are you in and who’s your carrier? If it’s not one of the above then what is your point?

Nothing is affecting you or your iPhone. The vast majority of the major carriers have already partnered with other satellite services.

I’ve been an Apple customer since iPods were first released and I will cancel everything if this happens. Absolutely horrible business decision. Read the room Apple.

If you had “read the room”, meaning the thread you just added a post to without reading it, you would know that Apple has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH T-MOBILE OFFERING ITS CUSTOMERS STARLINK. SHEESH, DOES NO ONE EVER READ ANYMORE?

Have you done the demo using the Apple’s (they’re part owner) Globalstar? It works in limited situations and can be blocked by obstacles much easier than Starlink and its competitors.

Personally, I don’t have a dog in the race. I’ve been with AT&T for 18 years. They’ll be competing with Starlink using their AST SpaceMobile service. Verizon is competing with their Inmarsat and Skylo services. Plenty to choose from.

Not true. My son did the update on Friday on his iPhone and had a lot of trouble being able to call or text without WiFi. A few hours later when he texted me it showed “iMessage-Satellite”. We have at&t

Did you read the rest of the thread? There are other satellite services in use. Starlink is ONLY being used by TMobile. I believe that AT&T is using Global Star.

Update: T-Mobile’s Starlink satellite feature is now in public beta, allowing anyone in the U.S. with an iPhone or Android to test it, even if they sign up for another carrier. It will be free until July.
I can't find anything supporting this, so can you please show us where you found this? I don't understand how this would work, since Starlink operates on the N51 band, which ONLY T-Mobile uses for Starlink.

Here you go: https://www.t-mobile.com/news/network/t-mobile-starlink-beta-open-for-all-carriers?clickref=1011lAeHygfB

It says in the first few lines: The beta is now open for absolutely everyone — yes, even Verizon and AT&T customers — to register for free access until July

I will leave iPhone quickly if this proceeds on my carrier and doesn’t have a guaranteed opt out. For now I’ve turned off updates until it’s clearer.

Why? Keep your iPhone up-to-date. If you're on T-Mobile, in the beta for satellite, your device is now compatible. Otherwise, there is nothing to fret about.

I contacted T-Mobile and was told we need to opt in for starlink connection on all current devices, but anything 17 or higher will have starlink compatibility built in. I still have not updated the iOS even though they assured me it was not going to connect me to starlink. If I can verify all of this, I will just buy out this phone at the end of my contract and cease upgrades. I like this phone.
