Side buttons (power & volume) quit working on iPad iOS 18.3.1

Did I switch them OFF somehow? Volume only works thru Control Center. Since it is new and I am fairly new to iPad, I've been playing with various settings. I can't see an obvious way to 're-activate' (??) the three external buttons.

So I forced a Settings > General > Shutdown. It booted back up and buttons were again responsive, for which I'm relieved. But I still don't know how I might have caused it, or was it the upgrade to 18.3.1, or other; that's a relatively minor upgrade??

And I will be checking to see if any other item(s) was affected.

Thank you for the very quick responses and help.

I'd chalk it up to a odd glitch, most probably due to the update that was recently installed. It seems that the issue you had turned up after the 18.3.1 update since it was just released this morning. Glitches happen and usually the first course of action is to power whatever the device is off, then back on.

Thanks for reporting back that the power-cycle helped.

That's up to you. If it's a way to solve your issue, isn't it worth a try? Nothing wrong with shutting down the iPad as no harm comes from that.

If the iPad will not power on again after it's shut down due to the power button, simply plugging it into a working charger will power it back on.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

Please, how does one gracefullly turn off the iPad when the left side power button is not working? Pressing that button regardless how long has no response. However, all other aspects are working, except sound controls from the two top buttons; only Control Center volume control is working.

I'm not being a smartass; I would prefer NOT to go to Settings > General > Shutdown, if possible.

Thank you.
