Iphone keeps asking for password you must enter both your apple account and password

My iPhone keeps asking for my account password at least 3 times a day! It prompts me to say “ apple account required: please sign in to your apple account in settings”. Then I click on settings and enter my password (which I know is correct as I physically typed it into my online apple account to log into this forum!) - but the when I hit enter it brings up another popup stating “you must enter BOTH your Apple account and password”. However there is no place for me to enter my account - the prompt only gives space for a password. This had been going on for about 2 months. I just updated to the latest ios software this morning and its still doing it!

Go to Settings/[your name] and sign out, then sign in again.

Was the phone purchased used and if so the phone come with any apps preinstalled.

Perhaps a long shot:

Do you have a 3rd party VPN installed, even if you are not using it? If so, delete the VPN profile in Settings/General/VPN & Device Management/VPN. Don't just turn it off; delete the profile. If that fixes it, you can try reinstalling VPN.
