Selling a Damaged MacBook

1. Tell the people you'll be trading it in with about the damage and see what they say.

2. Get an external drive and back it up yourself; it doesn't specifically need to be a Time Capsule. Copying the data to a display unit at the store isn't a backup; you aren't guaranteed access to the unit, and someone at the store may erase it.

It scares me that you don't seem to have an actual backup of your data. There are a lot more new ways to permanently lose access to the data stored on the internal SSD of the recent Macs due to all the hardware, software, and security changes.

People should always have frequent and regular backups of their computer and all external media (including the cloud) which contains important & unique data. Apple provides Time Machine backup software for free with macOS...all a user needs to do is purchase an external drive & configure Time Machine to use it.
