Can’t update lightning to usb3 camera adaptor

I have a mini 5th gen iPad and an I phone 14. 18.3 software on both. I read other instructions here about leaving plugged in overnight- nothing is working to update the firmware. On both devices it’s 1.01. I specifically bought this I pad to be able to upload photos from diving and so far cannot use it as it’s meant to be. (And then also my I 14.) the power source is plugged in when trying to update.
