Android user asks about useful iOS features

As an Android user i wanted to ask:

  1. When using an app or browser If you tap the top portion of the display does it go to the very top of the page?
  2. When hiding apps can you actually hide or edit the name of the "Hidden apps" folder so it can stay totally hidden?
  3. Can I use Google Wallet on my iPhone?
  4. When using Whatsapp or similar apps if i want to send a photo can i do that directly on the app or do i have to go to my photos then upload or share it from there?
  5. When unlocking the phone do i unlock using my face then i can swipe up to open my iPhone?
  6. If using London public transport do i have to open or "wake up" my phone to tap to pay or can i do it whilst the screen is off?
  7. Can i use the camera to scan QR codes|? And will it open automatically or manually?
  8. Can i drag n drop a photo and save it under my Photos?
  9. Can i do a scrolling or full page screenshot on a third-party browser or app?
  10. If i'm saving a .pdf file can i choose which app or location i can save it to?
  11. Is it true that we can now download apps from third-party sources or apps stores?
  12. Does all iPhones from the 15 to the 16 support a third-party mains charging?

Would love to hear from you. Many Thanks.

Yes, this would be an issue.

If the phone was associated with someone else's Apple Account, it might already be a "brick" displaying "Locked to Owner" – a sign that it was possibly stolen. Even if it was not on that screen, if

  • The owner of that Apple Account later marked the phone as Lost, or
  • You forgot your passcode and had to reset the phone to get back in

then it would turn into a useless "brick."

There is no workaround. You cannot bypass Activation Lock, and since you would not be the original owner in this scenario, Apple would flat-out refuse to help remove Activation Lock.

Even if the previous owner properly prepared the phone for resale as outlined in

What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

it might be locked to service from a particular carrier (phone company), or be permanently banned by Snapchat or others like them.

I appreciate the concern. As i mentioned previously YES i am and Android user and YES there is nothing wrong with that. But i will not agree that I am "comparing" feature by feature to an Android device. For years I have carefully waited and watched reviews of iPhones and i concluded, based on the things that i have been doing, that most things are better with an iPhone.

I also appreciate that probably the best thing is to go to an Apple Store or "Googling" my queries. But i still feel Forums and Community pages are personal and want to know the experiences of people.

I do have more questions but they may be my last ones and I would highly appreciate if people can contribute to my eventual conversion to being an iPhone user after all these years. Cheers.

Re Safari - is there a way to "simplify" the page into plain texts? Is there an option for Safari to read the text on a web page or article?

Is it true i can disable the camera button to prevent accidental touches when holding it or if its in my pocket?

Do 4K30 and 1080p60 video recording has the shutter button?

Would you agree to a certain degree than Google apps are better optimized in iOS than in Android?

I heard that iPhone photos take up more space due to the high-resolution nature of them. Is this true?

Again, I appreciate in advance all the help i get here. These are all invaluable information to help me better understand iOS in order for me to reach that point in deciding. Cheers.

Yes, webpages can be simplified in Safari. Apple Intelligence can assist in summarizing the page as well.

Answered Camera button question.

Yes, there’s a button to stop and start recording.

Never used an Android. Not sure why I would. There aesthetics, ergonomics and styling are unappealing to me. But to each their own.

Larger resolution files means higher quality images. Higher quality means larger file sizes. You want high quality photos, you use more storage space. Quality can be adjusted on iPhone but why would you want to?

It would be impossible to say without information about specific cameras / settings / models.

As a rule, high-resolution photos take up more space than lower-resolution ones. If you are referring to 48 MP cameras on some iPhones, I believe that the phone is typically set to record 12 MP or 24 MP of information, but that you can record 48 MP by changing a setting.

Note that as far as displays go,

  • 1920x1080 ("1080p") = about 2.1 megapixels
  • 2560x1440 ("2.5K") = about 3.7 megapixels
  • 3840x2160 ("UHD 4K") = about 8.3 megapixels
  • 5120x2880 ("5K") = about 14.7 megapixels
  • 7680x4320 ("8K") = about 33.2 megapixels

You only get that much for one picture if the picture has an aspect ratio that exactly matches the screen.

If you're trying to provide 300 PPI (90000 PPI^2) for printing,

  • 8" by 10" = 7.2 megapixels
  • 16" by 20" = 28.8 megapixels

and you could probably "cheat" a bit on the 300 PPI (especially on very large prints, where people will be viewing them at a distance) and get away with it.

I'm thinking of getting either the 15 Plus or the 16. If the HDR feature makes your photos too bright (especially the background or highlights) then I would turn it off. But if it makes the photos more balanced then i would keep it on even if it takes up more space.

I would probably use a 4:3 format on the main most of the times. I'll use the ultrawide if i am on holiday for thosw wide shots. For videos i would likely use 4K30 or 1080p60. I do not print my photos ever. Apart from really good occasions such as a wedding (not mine) or a freind's birthday or something.

Do these sound good to you? Any other basic tips i should consider or think about?

And would you ever use a third-party camera app to replace the stock one?

Mar 11, 2025 2:06 PM in response to Jeff Donald

Just to clarify a question: If i record in 4K40 or 1080p30 is there typically a shutter button on the side so whilst i am recording i can also take photos?

If i'm taking a photo i will mostly be using the main camera in 4:3 format. If taking a video i'll use 16:9. I heard these are the basic things you have to think of. Would you agree?

But if I have Google Photos to save my pictures would the issue of being concerned my hi-res photos would take up space be a non-issue?

I also managed to find out that if you swipe from the left you get all the notifications. If you swipe from the right you get the Control Center. As it stands there is no way to merge or combine them. Do you guys find this annoying or more simplified and easy to see?

"This is one of the reasons why i wanted to replace my Pixel 8 with an iPhone...either a 16 or a 15 Plus.

Thoughts?"

If you're still talking about using your phone on the Underground then my only thoughts are that I can't understand why people bother with it. I've never used my phone on the Underground. I buy paper tickets or use an Oyster card.

The reason I've got an iPhone is because I've got a Mac. The reason I've got the iPhone I've got is because it's small enough to fit in the buttoned-up pocket of my denim jacket. It's just a phone.

use third party camera app and movie app on the time. But it depends what I’m shooting.

Tips come if you own a device. What’s a tip to me might be your everyday way of doing things. Users compare notes all the time.

I use third party apps to do something the stock app doesn’t. Stock app can’t manual focus for example, on rare occasions I need that. Stock app allows me to manually set ISO and/or shutter speed. Occasionally, I need those features.

Mar 12, 2025 1:31 PM in response to Jeff Donald

May I ask what third-party camera app can you recommend for a bit more granular and flexible shooting modes and features which is not too advance but a wee bit more than the stock one? (I'm not a professional photographer, neither takes lots of photo. If i'm out & about in or out of London or when on holiday then yes i will be using my camera more. I would probably use 4K30 in short videos and 1080p60 in longer ones).

And is it true the general concensus is taking photos in 4:3 format and 16:9 in videos is the way to go?

Mar 13, 2025 3:58 PM in response to gino76ph

My favorite camera still photography app is Halide, it is a subscription though. I also use ReeHeld and ReeXpose for timed, slow shutter effects. ProCamera is good for a one time purchase app.

Video I use Filmic Pro, Blackmagic Cam or Final Cut Camera. The last two are free. Filmic is one time purchase.

The native sensor is 4:3 to still are shot 4:3 and cropped to what you want. The 16:9 is cropped from the 4:3 ratio.

Thank you for that.

You know this afternoon i went to an Apple Store. And pretty much most of my questions (apart from around 2-3 which i forgot to ask) got an answer all thanks to a friendly Apple person who was there to actually listen and happy to show me things that partly i knew already (based on my research & help here) and some i do not.

I wish I could have stayed more and ask more but I was really tired today.

I made my decision and I will be getting an iPhone 16 Plus due to it's ideal size for my hands - not too tall or wide or heavy. I still admit that there are things that Apple can be better with the iOS (more lockscreen customisations and clock choices, permanent numbers row in the keyboard and be able to edit the height, a universal back button and more apps to support the dynamic island) but i think and I hope I will be able to transition and won't have a long learning curve.

Not too keen on the AI features but obviously it will help me a lot.

Another question that pops to mind is: If i decide to buy an iPhone from a third-party private reseller and they forgot to disable or turn off the "Find my iPhone" feature will that be an issue if i initially set up the phone? Or is there a workaround?

Mar 14, 2025 11:59 AM in response to gino76ph

"Not too keen on the AI features "

Android is also going all in on AI, whether it's Google's version or Samsung, etc.

I find all of the AI stuff unnecessary and never use it.

Activation Lock can't be bypassed.

I would avoid buying from a third party private individual, unless it is someone you actually know and can easily contact so you can ensure they do this:

If you buy a used iPhone, which is activation locked, you'll be the proud owner of a useless brick you can't use and Apple won't unlock for you. Don't EVER buy an iPhone from anyone unless you can see it in person and when it is turned on, opens to the Hello Page.

Because it's one less thing to have to carry and keep track of. The transit system in the city where I live doesn't offer tickets or tokens anymore. You can pay cash or use a card that I assume is similar to an Oyster card. Or you can use the phone you probably already have in your hand or pocket.

It also obviates the need to log into the transit website to keep track of balances or make sure that the auto-replenishment information is up-to-date.
