iphone screen frozen. will not unlock with swipe up.

I have a very frozen iphone. this happened today after the battery went down to 1% and after I recharged it.

I tried to clear it up by pressing the volume up and volume down key, then the button on the right side.

Nothing changed, the same screen still comes up - showing old messages which I cannot access by touching the screen.

Also I cannot power it off.

The "Up, Down, Side" instructions require some precision:

  • Press and quickly release VOLUME UP

     then

  • Press and quickly release VOLUME DOWN

     then

  • HOLD the SIDE button until an Apple logo appears (15-30 seconds), ignoring "slide to power off" if it appears

The operative word here is QUICKLY for the first two buttons; and try it a couple of times, the timing is a little tricky. If done correctly this will always work unless the phone has a hardware problem.
