iMessages won't show unread messages count

The unread count on my Messages app has disappeared. I have tried all the suggestions on support. The notification has banners checked, tried turning it off/on and powering down in all sorts of combinations.

How to fix iPad iMessage showing 1 unread message? On iPad iMessage shows 1 unread message when there are none. Someone suggested signing out of iMessages. This does work. You can also shut down and restart the iPad to remove the nonfunctional icon. These fixes are band aids not permanent fixes. Apple needs to correct this. Come on Apple fix your software.
