iPad Comes on by itself, open to the unlock keypad

I have also noticed drops in my battery charge, despite having a Lightning cable from the wall charger plugged into the iPad's Lightning port all the time. Another thing I have observed while using the iPad, especially when watching a movie, is that some unknown app opens right in the middle of the screen for just a second, then dissppears. The last time this happened I had enough time to read the word "Accessory" on the app. I have no such apps installed on my iPad. Obviously, someone has remote access to my iPad, but I have checked and found Bluetooth is turned off, as it is all the time. Apparently, the access is via my WiFi connection (Xfinity).

As it turns out, part of the problem was that the "app" that kept briefly appearing and disappearing was actually the notification that "This Accessory is Not Supported." What was happening was the power cable (USB to Lightning), which I keep plugged in all the time, was failing and when I'd lose charge, the iPad was reading my power cable as an "unsupported device" because the power was declining while something was plugged into the Lightning Port. As for the iPad coming on while turned off, this hasn't occurred again, so I can't be sure what the cause is.

If your iPad is not operating as expected, try a forced-restart - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad - and you can explore your available options:

I use my iPad in landscape orientation, so the Start button is on the side. The volume buttons have nothing to do with my iPad being controlled remotely. This is not a software issue. No apps on my iPad are involved in this in any way. The iPad, when turned OFF is being turned ON without me doing anything at all. I watched this happen three times last night. Also, did you ignore my mention of an unknown app, not installed on my iPad, appearing in the middle of the screen while I was watching a movie? Nothing installed on my iPad by me caused that to happen. It only appeared onscreen for a brief moment and then disappeared. It was NOT an iPad app. As I said, this more than likely is a highjack via my WiFi network. As for where it's coming from, it is certainly not coming from inside my building, which is populated by people aged 62 on up who (unlike myself) have little to no experience with digital technology to speak of (not to mention the sociopathic motivation to do anything like this). The most likely culprit is a new resident in the recently completed appartment complex across the street. The quick glimpse of the app I saw appear on my screen looked nothing like an iPad app and certainly not one I have installed. The reason I started this thread is because the existing thread on the same subject, last posted to in November, has been closed. There were many people in that thread reporting exactly the same thing I have reported here and my search on this subject is what led me to that thread.

I haven't suggested "adjusting volume controls" - however, the buttons are used to trigger a force-restart of your iPad, this being an action that ensures the iPad will restart to a clean-state, purging any memory resident code that may be causing issues.

However, as you have no intention of following advice, I wish you the best of luck in addressing the problem on your own.

Really? How would I know whether it's helpful or not? This doesn't happen all the time or every day. I have no control over it. This isn't happening because of anything I am doing. I am not a beginner. I have been using computers since 1983. This is an external exploit, most likely using my WiFi network. I checked, the first time it happened, to see if Bluetooth was on. It was not, so it's not an issue of either Bluejacking or Bluesnarfing. Why are you assuming this has anything to do with my use of the iPad? I've had three iPads since 2012 and I use mine daily, all day long. I'm telling you, this issue is happening because someone else is making it happen, for whatever reason. There are sociopaths in the world. Some of them are running the world. Did you bother to read the many messages in the earlier thread on iPads turning on by themselves? You might want to do that before making suggestions like adjusting the volume controls (?!).

Okay, I used the second method (iPads with home buttons). Of course, as I said, there is no way for me to know if this solved the problem because the problem was never an issue with the iPad itself. As I described it, what I witnessed was an external exploit of the iPad, most likely via my WiFi connection. The problem hasn't occurred all day, anyway. Maybe when I pushed the Cancel button beneath the keypad it cancelled whatever the intruder was doing. Then I simply turned the iPad off. But, as I said, it came back on again about twenty to thirty minutes later. I watched as it happened.

Anyway, the intruder hasn't been back, whether due to my use of the forced-restart or for his own reasons. No way of knowing.
