Error: Software update required to connect to iPhone: not available from Update Server

Recently, I started to receive the error message, "Software update required to connect to iPhone: not available from Update Server" when trying to connect my iPhone via USB to my MacBook Pro. It physically sees the phone as being connected (e.g. it will sync photos), but won't let things like screen mirroring work. The prompt to update sits there for about 20 seconds after approving it, but then returns the aforementioned error message. It is not clear from the message whether it is the iPhone, the MacBook, or both to which this prompt to update applies.

I've researched this for a while, and based upon the many, many similar posts this seems to be a long-standing problem that spans several versions of iOS and macOS, so the typical default answers; "upgrade your software", "try a different cable" or "restart your device" have not worked for me nor do they seem to work for most people based upon the many unresolved posts on the topic.

For this, many posts speculate that the iOS is either out-of-date -OR- they blame the latest update as breaking something ... iOS 16.x, 17.x, and 18.x each have been implicated. On the macOS side, the posts range from "High Sierra" up through "Sequoia" as being at-fault for the problem. Given the wide range of possible iOS and macOS combinations involved all having the same problem, it must be some obscure security or sharing setting common to all that is causing this problem. I've not found a good answer searching based on this either nor found an Apple doc clearly addressing the issue.

Any suggestions?

If you're encountering the error "Software update required to connect to iPhone: not available from Update Server," try these troubleshooting steps: ensure your computer and iPhone are connected via a reliable USB cable, check your internet connection, and verify your computer's software is up-to-date.

Here's a more detailed breakdown of potential solutions:

1. Check Your Connection and Cables:

  • Use the correct cable:
  • Make sure you're using the USB cable that came with your iPhone or an Apple-certified one, and that it supports both data and charging.
  • Try a different USB port:
  • Plug your iPhone into a different USB port on your computer, avoiding ports on your keyboard.
  • Check for debris:
  • Unplug the cable from your iPhone and check for any debris in the charging port.
  • Connect directly:
  • Avoid using hubs or adapters; connect your iPhone directly to your computer.
  • Test with another computer:
  • If possible, try connecting your iPhone to a different computer to see if the issue persists.

2. Verify Software and System Updates:

  • Update your computer: Ensure your computer's operating system (macOS or Windows) is up to date.
  • Check for iTunes or Apple Devices updates: If you're using iTunes or the Apple Devices app, make sure they are also updated.
  • Check for third-party security software: Some security software can interfere with connections; temporarily disable it to see if that resolves the issue.

3. Address Potential Issues with Your iPhone:

  • Force Restart your iPhone:
  • A force restart can resolve temporary software glitches. To do this, press and quickly release the volume up button, then press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.
  • Check Storage Space:
  • Ensure your iPhone has enough storage space for the update. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and check available space.
  • Delete the update (if applicable):
  • If you have a downloaded update that's causing issues, you can delete it. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage, find the update in the list of apps, tap it, and then tap Delete Update.
  • Check for Apple Server Issues:
  • If you're still having trouble, check Apple's System Status page to see if there are any known issues with their servers.

4. If Problems Persist:

  • Contact Apple Support: If you've tried all the troubleshooting steps and the issue continues, reach out to Apple Support for further assistance.

Thanks, but as mentioned in my original post, I have already tried the basic, common sense stuff as suggested by this generic list of things to try.

This issue that I am experiencing is more likely associated with needing to change some Apple security or sharing setting or applying a special patch update that is not obvious but only found either from a specific Apple support bulletin or from a Mac community post. This is the type of solution that I am seeking, but so far have not found such online that was a definitive fix.
