Apple Iphone 15 devices are not getting charged via USB-C port in a digital AV adapter

If I connect only my audio system to USB-A and connect the USB-C port to my iphone 15, the audio works good. The moment I connect a charger cable to the adapter, both stops working. And it never charges. If I connect only the charger cable, it does charge the iphone. This issue was reported in Aug 2023 by another user.

Tried connecting the charger cable to PD chargers as well. This happens with 3rd party digital av adapters as well.

Is this going to be fixed?

Previously I used a lightning digital av adapter and everything worked good with my iphone 11.

Any workarounds / a working product for this issue?

iPhone 11, iOS 18

What you’re seeing is related to how power negotiation and USB-C routing are handled by the iPhone 15 and these adapters — especially when trying to use both HDMI output and charging simultaneously.

The core issue: most USB-C Digital AV adapters are designed with Macs or iPads in mind, where power and data are negotiated differently. On iPhone 15, which is still relatively new to the USB-C world, the device can be picky — especially if the adapter is trying to handle both HDMI and power while also offering a USB-A data/audio path. When you plug in your charger, the iPhone sees a conflict in power/data routing and shuts down both charging and HDMI/audio output, which is why everything stops working.

Regardless, there still a few other things you can try until this gets resolved:

  • Try Apple’s official USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter (Model A2119): This is the only adapter that has a reasonable success rate with iPhone 15, though it’s still not perfect in all scenarios. You’ll want to plug the charger (at least 20W USB-C PD) into the USB-C port before connecting the adapter to the iPhone. Then, plug in HDMI and USB-A if needed. This order sometimes helps avoid the failure you're seeing.
  • Use a powered USB-C hub with HDMI that explicitly lists iPhone 15 compatibility: Look for USB-C hubs that have a PD passthrough and explicitly mention support for iPhone 15 in reviews or product descriptions. Some from Anker and HyperDrive are beginning to account for this.
  • Use AirPlay for AV instead: Since you're outputting audio and video, consider an Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible device.
  • Use a Lightning to USB-C adapter (Model A2119 + Lightning AV): This sounds backwards, but some users have used their old Lightning AV adapter with the USB-C to Lightning adapter (official Apple one) to retain compatibility with iPhone 15.
