Macbook pro screen stays off when i open the lid

After leaving the lid down, I usually reopen my MacBook Pro M3 to be met with a dark display. The keyboard backlight turns on but nothing for the screen. Sometimes I have to shut the lid and reopen it twice or even three times for things to return to normal. Simply waiting for the screen to turn on doesn't work. How do I fix this?

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 15.3
