How can I activate my iPhone 6s after forgetting Lock Screen password?

Last year I have moved to a new country and unfortunately got robbed and lost my phone. A nice friend ,who was a very fresh friend for me those days, offered me his old Iphone 6s to use until I got a new phone. I have set up a password lock up screen for the phone while using it. After I got a new phone, I have given back this phone to him. To be on safe side, I have removed this phone from my apple account connected devices. A few weeks ago, he tried to open this, but told me lock screen password is still needed to open the phone and lend me his phone to enter my password for him. The problem is I have already forgotten password and tried all combinations I could think of and locked the phone. Is there a way to re-activate this phone? or I owe him a new iphone 6s?

If you failed to prepare that iPhone before returning it then he may be out of luck and you may own him a phone. See if these support articles are of any help. If your friend still has the original sales receipt for that iPhone he can take it to an Apple Store and ask fro help.
