What should I do after a juice spill on my MacBook Air?

We are not sure whether it works well or not, but before switching off the mousepad wasn’t, keyboards seemed ok. We followed advice about switching it off. debating now whether the tent position is a good idea. Any tips?

The damage is already done no matter what you do. I don't advise tilting the laptop since you will likely cause the liquid to move to other internal areas making it more likely to cause even more damage especially if it did not hit anything critical already.

With any liquids other than pure water, they will leave behind a residue. If it got onto the keyboard, then you will end up with sticky keys once the liquid evaporates.

The only way to minimize damage to the internal components is by removing all power sources from the laptop as soon as possible. This includes the power adapter, external devices, and disconnecting the internal battery. However, it is difficult to open these newer laptops and tricky to disconnect the battery since there are multiple connections with one very fragile & easily damaged cable & connector. Even experienced Apple repair techs can have trouble here. It is the combination of liquid contacting powered electrical circuits that cause corrosion which is the second way liquid damage causes problems. Corrosion can start to occur within 15 minutes, but probably isn't severe enough until maybe an hour or so later unless it corrodes a very fine pin or a solder joint hidden beneath a chip where the corrosion cannot even be seen.

With official Apple repairs it does not matter since Apple will replace any parts which show signs of liquid residue, corrosion, or has a tripped Liquid Sensor on it. Apple is all or nothing here and I completely understand why Apple does this. Apple accidental damage repairs are extremely expensive....many times it is cheaper to just buy a new laptop, so be ready to make that choice.

If you are prone to accidental damage for whatever reason, then you may want to consider purchasing AppleCare+ which will reduce the cost of accidental damage repairs. With AppleCare+ for laptops, the US prices are generally:

  • Display Assembly $99US --- Apple refers to this in the AC+ documentation is the "screen and external enclosure"....with older models the screen & external enclosure (aka Rear Display Housing) were separate parts, but with Retina laptops there is just the single part.
  • Other accidental damage $299US --- this includes everything else than the Display Assembly. It is the Top Case/Keyboard/Palmrest Assembly, Logic Board, I/O Boards, Speakers, Battery, etc.

If both the base of the laptop sustains damage and also the Display Assembly, then the AC+ repair cost is $398US ($99 Display + $299 other). This is not clearly mentioned in the AC+ documentation, but it is hinted (or at least is was hinted in earlier documents). I know this from first hand personal experience and it is a shame Apple does not make this clear in the AC+ documentation in the following Apple article although they might in the full AC+ agreement:
