❓Can I Use a 30W Charger for iPhone 15 (Base Model)?

Hi everyone,

I’m using the iPhone 15 (base model), which I know supports fast charging up to 20W via USB-C. I already have a 30W USB-C charger that I use for my MacBook, and I’m wondering:

  • Is it safe to use a 30W charger with the iPhone 15?

  • Will using a higher-wattage charger affect battery health or cause any long-term damage?

  • Does the phone just limit the power draw to 20W, or are there any benefits to using a 30W charger?

Appreciate any insights or personal experiences. Thanks!

iPhone 15, iOS 18

Yes, it's perfectly safe to charge with a 20W charger for iPhone. In fact about any wattage charger. To fast charge the iPhone requires a minimum of 20W, but using more will not charge any faster. It will not damage your battery health or cause any long-term damage, your iPhone regulates the charge that goes into it. There is ultimately no benefit to using a higher wattage charger than 20W to Fast Charge.

The only benefit to using a 30W charger is to save the cost of a 20W if you already have the 30W.

HOWEVER, if you are using Wireless charging it will charge faster with a 30W, because wireless charging is “lossy.”

All that aside, if you follow the best practice of charging overnight, every night, with Optimized Charging enabled, you can use even a basic 5W “cube”, because you have all night to complete the charge.
