my old ipad died and won't power up - how can I recover it onto a newer ipad?

My ipad from college died. The power button doesn't work, it won't charge & it won't power up. It was automatically backing up to icloud, so I have an old backup stored out there. I recently tried to restore it to a newer (gen9) ipad using iTunes. But when I restored it using itunes, it didn't restore the old ipad settings & stuff - it restored to look like my iphone from yesterday. How do I reset my ipad to the old ipad backup?

If your iPad cannot be successfully restarted to a running state, no data or settings can be recovered from it. The iPad has an encrypted filesystem to which access is designed to be impossible without the associated encryption keys of which the only copies are retained within the iPad.

As such, if your existing backup is incomplete, any missing files or data will be unrecoverable.
