Cant turn off stolen detection device on iPad3

I want to transfer my Mom’s iPad3 to someone else but she forgot the password. I tried to wipe things clean with iTunes but I can’t complete the setup as I can’t remove the iPad from my Apple account because the stolen protection device was turned on, and I can’t turn it off on the iPad as it’s in still in the set up phase.

The old backup for the iPad was on our old computer so I can’t go that route.

Is there a process to resolve this madness?

For that device to be properly prepared usable by anyone else, the password of it’s associated Apple Account MUST be known.

Hard to say based only on your descriptions …

… but I’d guess that your Mom’s device is on your Mom’s account …

… and you’re “viewing” it on your account via Family Sharing.

Only your Mom can delete the device from her account. (and she can’t do that without her password)

It’s actually our old iPad that we gave to my Mom some time ago. I never removed it from my Apple account as my Mom doesn’t have an account.

The iPad3 shows up a trusted account on my account, along with my iPhone 11, but I can’t remove the iPad because the stolen device protection is still enabled. Had I realized this was going to be so much trouble, I would have kept trying to guess what her password was.

The iPad shows up on my Account Security and is listed as a trusted account, along with my iPhone 11, so why am I not allowed to remove it??
