iPhone 16 pro max external speaker issues

So I paid over 1k for an iPhone 16 pro max. 512 GB running IOS 18.5

had this phone brand new. And ever since unboxing, it has been having these audio issues only present through the external speakers.

so, when playing music, or any other media, doesn’t have to be Apple Music. This goes for YouTube, Spotify etc.

when playing music, especially during instrumental e.g. piano solos, or any instrumental part of a song, the volume decreases by a LOT and the quality of the phone speakers become unacceptably ****.. but as SOON as vocals or any type of voice comes in, the speakers go back to normal and they sound great.

this has nothing to do with any settings as I’ve checked EVERYTHING. Do not fault this.

I’ve never had this issue with the previous iPhones I’ve had up until this point. I’m 1000% POSITIVE I didn’t change any audio settings since having this phone. So it’s pretty disappointing really,

as that’s the main reason why I got this phone, was for the speaker quality that I’m not even getting fully.

the volume keeps fluctuating and becoming ‘tinny’ like an old android. It’s very irritating especially when certain parts of your song that is your favourite gets ruined.

it gets ruined because iPhone decides to shun the volume and quality.

Apple, Sort your over compression out or whatever’s going on with the external speakers.

this is clearly a software issue!

people are dropping thousands on a phone that is doing worse in sound quality than ALL the previous models?…

HOW is this not fixed yet??

I know 2 other people with the same phone having this exact problem.

a lot of people online are having this same issue too! There’s so many forums about this so I KNOW it’s not just me or my device.

My deepest apologies… silly mistake… thanks for correcting me.
I’m aware of the 2 stereo speakers on the iPhone, earpiece loudspeaker, and the bottom right.

The speakers built into iPhone or for that matter any cell phone are very small. Personally, the quality of the sound from a cell phone is literally at the bottom of the "important features" list for me. Small speakers can only sound so good. It's hard to defy the laws of physics as speakers move air to make sounds. Small speakers can't move a lot of air, so for me, cell phone speakers, including the ones built into my iPhone 16 Pro Max are acceptable, but not suitable for realistic music listening. I use Bluetooth earphones exclusively to listen to music.

I just listened to mine for a song and didn't notice the compression you seem to hear. One of the places I'd check on your phone would be Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual - is Balance set to 0.00? Also make sure Add Voice Isolation is NOT turned on.

For example, if I was to compare the iPhone 16 pro max with an iPhone 14pro max using the same YouTube link, the iPhone 14 retains its volume and quality, while the 16 fluctuates for some reason, both at same volume. That’s what I’m trying to get to. Leading to me believe that it’s an issue with iPhone 16s audio mixing trying to compress itself.

Even my iPhone 12 PM sounds more fuller playing that same YouTube link.

Again this has nada to do with the speaker size and how much air moves around.

because when the iPhone 16 plays music as intended, vocals etc… it’s blows the other 2 phones out the water. it’s just the over compressed instrumentals.

there’s nothing any of us can do but wait for a fix for the 16 to sort the said audio issues.

Of course I read you didn't change any settings. In your first post, you didn't mention Voice Isolation at all. Often settings are not necessarily set correctly and all I was doing was offering a suggestion on somewhere to check, which by the way, most people are completely unaware of those specific settings.

I also don't need to listen to the song you suggest. As I clearly said, I don't buy a phone for the speakers built into the phone, which to me are universally disappointing whether iPhone or any other phone. When I listen to music, it's ALWAYS going to be with high quality Bluetooth headphones.

If you think there's an issue with your phone, it's not going to be solved here on this user to user only forum. Schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar and show what you're hearing to Apple directly.

Devonte_, instead of continuing to argue with me, which is totally pointless, I recommended that you schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar and let Apple test your phone. There's nothing anyone here can do to help you with the sound on your internal speakers. Perhaps you have a hardware issue? We can't hear what you're hearing on your phone.

If your intent is to make this a discussion with users only, that's fine. But if you're hoping to get anyone's attention at Apple that's not going to happen by you posting here. You're already learned there is moderation here, but that's not Apple. Apple won't see your complaint here. But you are more than welcome to continue posting about this. Apple won't see it, nor respond to your posts, however.

You believe you have an issue with the internal speakers on your phone. If you think showing the issue to Apple is pointless, that's fine and totally up to you. But no one other than Apple would be in a better position to test your phone to see if there is an issue.

Please reread the post where I mentioned the fact that I haven’t changed any audio settings. Even “add VI” is off.. I do own AirPods Pro 2 but I like to switch on occasion to iPhone. Because yes I’m aware of how small the internal speakers are, and how they work in a small space. But they still sound great to me and Apple does a great job in making them sound good. Maybe not to you because they aren’t so important to you.

try playing ‘Her Nerdeysen’ by Ati242, from 20 seconds wait until the vocals kick in…

listen first with your phone speakers then compare with your AirPods, then tell me if that’s normal for a phone speaker to you. It’s not and I know it’s not.

It’s not a good example but try playing any song with just piano and no vocal too. Just piano… Same problem.

I know this is too much probably but…

(cringe but it’s the best example I can give) and just listen, compare your 16 pm to an older iPhone above 12. you will fully understand this had nothing to do with the speaker build or how small they are.

Voice isolation has nothing to do with media playback. Anybody knows that. So I didn’t think I needed to mention it seen as it was common sense. But thank you for the suggestion.

im well aware you don’t listen to music through your phone. I simply just said compare the sound with another device to have a better understanding. but if you ‘don’t need to’, then there’s no point trying to give me suggestions on what to do when you barely know or want to know what the issue is I’m trying to explain.

I’m clearly speaking to the people that listen to music on their phone. so can I ask kindly why you (who does not) are replying to me if this isn’t of any importance to you?

Im not putting this message here for it to be solved. I’m well aware this is a user forum, but with enough interaction I’m pretty sure it’ll be recognised as an actual issue.

I’m trying to make this known that this had been an issue most people have reported with this phone.

So going to the apple Genius Bar is void. They won’t do nothing as replacing the phone would have the same issue.

if you thought I was trying to chide you then you clearly aren’t mature enough to have this conversation. g’day.

I listen to music from my phone ALL the time. Just not through the speakers built into the phone. I'm responding because maybe you have expectations which can't be met from the teeny tiny speakers built into your phone. And because anyone is welcome to post here, even if you don't exactly appreciate what they have to say.

As to my suggestion about Voice Isolation, I wouldn't guess EVERYONE know what it does. Nor why Apple says and I quote "Other elements of the audio mix will be substantially reduced." Sure, that may not have any affect on music, but it was just a suggestion.

I don't appreciate you commenting on my maturity at all, which was completely unnecessary. If you read my post above I removed the chided part immediately after posting it.

I'll leave you now, so I do hope you find what you're looking for.

Yes you listen to music on your phone. I very clearly meant that i’m speaking to the people that listen through the internal speakers of the phone. In which you stated you do not!

this does not apply to you.

these 'expectations' is what I’d think would be normal. Especially for perfectly built “teeny tiny speakers.”

I clearly suggested if you could compare with another device so you could build an understanding to what I'm even discussing.

this has nothing to do with the size of the internal speakers. But the over-compression iPhone 16 has!

as I stated before, this doesn't happen on older models!!

voice isolation is for calls and FaceTime, so thanks for the suggestion. But you even said and I quote "that may not have an effect on music.” And media playback is what I’m discussing. Not phone calls.

Jul 14, 2025 10:44 AM in response to lobsterghost1

you can’t hear what I’m hearing because you don’t use ur internal speakers. As you stated yourself. So recommending an apple Genius Bar appointment to me is pretty pointless considering I’ve done that already when i got this phone. I’m evidently making this a known issue not only me is experiencing, so people unlike you can relate to it. A discussion is not an argument. End of.

I stand mistaken, my apologies. I would have hoped that if this had enough traction Apple would recognise this, I’m kind of a noob to this community so I don’t really know what goes on.

I have already reported to Apple feedback about this after being suggested to do so. and as I stated, I already had Apple look at my device.

its clear now that it’s a software issue and that I’d have to wait for a fix.

never once said showing this issue to Apple was pointless :).

Thanks and i hope you have the day you deserve.
