App Store subscription renewal issue after free trial

So… I paid for a free trial and ended the subscription on the last day of the free trial now im having to pay a yearly subscription. I waited for the subscription to expire and now it says it’s both inactive and pending. I have no intention of paying it; since then I haven’t been able to update and download apps on my device

Seems free trials (and subscriptions) need to be cancelled at least 24 hours before they expire,

if you do not want to continue subscribing, and be charged for the following subscription period.

If you haven't yet cancelled the subscription, you may want to do so, so you don't incur further charges:

See what to do: .If you want to cancel a subscription from Apple - Apple Support

or

If you are in Germany, Israel, South Africa or Turkiye

See the info.About canceling subscriptions in Germany, Israel, South Africa, or Türkiye - Apple Support

If in India: See: About billing for Apple subscriptions and media products in India - Apple Support

If in Europe or Japan: See: About billing and purchases in Europe and Japan - Apple Support

Re: I have no intention of paying it;

You can't request a refund for a "pending" amount ... so seems your account's pending amount will remain. .

Only if the subscription has been cancelled, and the purchase transaction has been completed:

You can then try to: Request a refund for apps or content that you bought from Apple - Apple Support

Else for a subscription that is not one of Apple's own products (Music, iCloud etc.)

The best source of help for a product not made by Apple (a third-party product) is the company or person who made it—its vendor or developer:

See how to: Contact a third-party vendor - Apple Support

or

If the developer has a website, there may be help or support for the app online:

See: How to contact an app developer - Apple Support

Re: "... since then I haven’t been able to update and download apps on my device "

That would be correct. Seems Apple does not allow us to use an account with a pending amount for a previous transaction. Apple support's online article has the details:

If a message says 'billing problem with previous purchase' or 'verification required' - Apple Support

Note:

There's a link at the very bottom of the above article if you want to to contact the correct Apple team.

All the best :-)
