Touch ID not working to wake MacBook Pro after macOS 26 update

I have a 2019 MacBook Pro (Intel) that I just upgraded to OS 26 Tahoe and on which I can no longer use Touch ID to wake from sleep. Once awake however it works perfectly to log in to any website or program that is set up with passkeys. This only started once I upgraded. There have also been times when I come back an hour or more after the computer goes to sleep that I open the lid and for a brief moment, maybe a second or two, where I can see and read the screen perfectly fine only for it to go black and ask me to use Touch ID or type password. Even then, the Touch ID does not work. The button in the upper right of the keyboard simply is not functioning. I've wiped it, cleaned it and even re-washed my hands but nothing works. Even after these bizarre times it works perfectly to log in to various sites that take my fingerprint as a passkey. Works perfectly to log in to a website but no longer for waking my computer up from sleep. Anyone else have this happen? Apple, are you watching this? What is going on?

After upgrade to OS 26 Touch ID only work… - Apple Community

For you specific questions:

  • Anyone else have this happen? I also have a 2019 (Intel) MacBook Pro without a Touch ID issue. Did you review the information provided by leroydouglas.
  • Apple, are you watching this? No they do not see your post here. If you want to send feedback to Apple, you will need to do that here. This support site is mostly made up of users just like you. Product Feedback - Apple
  • What is going on? Not sure, that would require more troubleshooting. When you did the wipe, did you restore everything back on your computer or do a clean install. One of the best ways to check for third party processes running on startup that may be causing a problem is to post the free EtreCheck report using the Additional Text option when posting. The report contains no personal information.

I think I've found the solution!

When iPhone Mirroring is set to automatically authenticate, the "require password after screen saver begins or display is turned off" option is automatically set to "Immediately" and cannot be changed. However, when the iPhone Mirroring is NOT set to automatically authenticate, The "reguire password ..." can be changed to "Never" and my Touch ID works!

Well, appreciate the testimonial and all the hoops you jumped— it has become a known issue in Tahoe yes.

If you are seeing in your 15.7.1—Important to File your feedback/bug report— it's a numbers game which bugs get prioritized as the point-updates roll out over the course of a year.

If this is an external keyboare turn off the Mac and the keyboard. Use the charging cable and turn the Mac back on with the keyboard plugged in remove all finger prints and set it back up.

setup fingerprint for magic keyboard

Internal keyboard remove all Finger prints and set up anew with new Finger print

Verify your Settings >System Settings>TouchID & Passwords

>System Settings>Lock Screen make changes if necessary

If Touch ID isn't working on Mac - Apple Support

There are a few instances where Touch ID will not be accepted by macOS:

If you restarted your Mac, or if you're not logged into your user account.

If you have not unlocked your Mac for 48 hours.

If you are trying to unlock Security & Privacy

If you are trying to unlock Users & Groups Settings (when FileVault is on)

If 5 wrong fingerprint attempts

Leroydouglas,

Here is a screenshot of my "Lock Screen" in settings. Note the password portion you've noted in red is grayed out on my computer:

While I have no idea why this is so, it is something to note and I suspect is the reason for my problem.

Just a couple things as well:

I am not using an external keyboard.

I did not wipe my computer prior to installing OS 26 Tahoe, I just did an upgrade like I've been doing the entire 5-6 years I've owned this computer.

I've restarted my computer about 5 times in the last couple days trying to get this to work.

Interestingly, to post this answer I used the Touch ID to sign into Apple.com and it worked just fine. This tells me there seems to be two different ways the Touch ID is used.

And lastly, about 20 minutes ago I woke up my computer by using the Touch ID after it had been asleep for around 45 minutes and it worked fine. That's the rub - sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

In the entire time I've owned this computer, I've always upgraded the day I was able to do so and I've never had anything like this happen so I'm really at a loss. Maybe the laws of averages has finally caught up to me?

Thank you and Mac Jim ID for the information but I don't know where to go from here. Is there a way to "re-install" the OS 26? Maybe that might fix it.

This is an old issue "Require password" option greyed going back to Sequoia

Mirroring issue— always asking for password and /or password required not TouchID

mac—Open the iPhone Mirroring app

Phone Mirroring .app>Settings from the menu bar click on "ask every time", not the “auto authorization.”

Restart your Mac, go back to your >System Settings>Lock Screen and the psswd field>set psswd requirement to "never"

Restart both devices if necessary.

I guess I spoke too soon. After I went through the steps listed above, I was able to use Touch ID after waking it up but now sometimes my computer won't accept my Touch ID despite showing the option to do so. Then sometimes it works perfectly. And yet, other times the option simply is missing and I must use my password. I'm at a loss about what to do but maybe this is just a flaw that may be fixed in an upcoming upgrade ... (I'm not holding my breath)

Same thing with my 2019 MBP with Touch Bar. I have reset my fingerprints since starting to have this problem which began immediately after installing MacOS 26. Prior to this I never had an issue with it working. When waking after sleep the login indicates I either need to type in a password OR use fingerprint; it's just that no amount of presenting my finger is acknowledged. When it does work, it works flawlessly. And, as others have noted, once logged in it works on sites set to use fingerprint for authentication. Hoping this is corrected soon.
