Traded in phone still shows up in Find My in repair mode

I traded my iPhone 15 Pro Max in to upgrade to the 17 Pro. After I left the store I noticed my iPhone 15 Pro Max still shows at the Apple Store location. My fiancé still sees my location as the old phone too.

Find My shows ”Ready for Repair or Trade In. This device remains fully functional in the repair state” and the location is the Apple Store I bought from.

Makes me feel ultra uneasy about having my phone out there fully functioning. It should’ve been wiped completely.

The guy at the Apple Store told me there was something I could do about it when I went back the next day.

I sent the erase command and it says it’s pending. Since no one can get into it, I don’t think it’ll ever get back online. But in theory, someone would just have unlimited time to try cracking my six digit pin.

Thanks for any help! I’m a bit shocked this could even happen.

That is what happens when you remove a device using Find My on iCloud. It will remain in that state for 30 days, then removed from your account.

The other way to remove the device and erase it is to do it right from the device and likely what the guy at the Apple Store was referring to by going back to the store. This will remove it immediately:

No one will be able to get into your phone by attempting to "crack" you PIN with unlimited attempts. The erase command does not remove the Activation Lock though, and that will still happen according to the first Support Article. After the Activation Lock is removed, your data would be erased whether you did that remotely or not, since a reset would be required to remove your Passcode.
