How do I convert live photos to regular photos and reclaim storage space on iPhone?

Can you turn a live photo into a regular photo? I know about the setting where you can turn it off on a particular photo, but that does not give you back your storage space. Also, I know how to turn off the live photo feature, but somehow I keep accidentally turning it on which is so annoying. APPLE, please help!

Applecare not here, just us volunteers.

Having turned Live off in the camera, go to iphone Settings, Camera, Preserve settings, then turn Live photo ON. The may seem counter intuitive but that will remember your Live off setting next time you open the camera.

Yes you can, but it doesn't seem to save any space either.

In Photos, tap Collections, goto Live Photos collection, Tap on Select at the top, select AT LEAST TWO photos, then tap the (...) at the top, then tap Duplicate, then Duplicate as still photos. Then delete the live versions.

When I tested this my 3.7MB live photo became a 3.7MB still photo.
