How to restore 'After 4 hours' option for passcode requirement in Face ID settings on iPhone 17?

I have the same problem too and it used to work (fine) like this for years. I don’t get it why people judge the way other people want to use their belongings. Yes the phone is unlocked for a certain time but anything critical is still protected either by passcode or faceID. Plus it still works on my iPhone 12 ios26.2.1 too, that’s so annoying !!!!

I did too. It always worked and every bank app and Apple Pay did ask FaceID to open and that’s it! It just worked, people must understand that FaceID just isn’t that efficient, at night for exemple it often doesn’t recognise my face, or wearing a mask, even when it works it adds a little time to unlock that is so annoying.. come on Apple bring back the old way of working !

Only protected if you have Stolen Device Protection.

Even then your contacts, messaging and email are not protected for example.

The old ways would be passcode which you are welcome to use instead.

Apple are not here to accept your "Come on"

Has anyone actually resolved this? This thread seems to be a frustrating read of people not understanding the actual issue and going completely off topic.

I have 2 iPhones. iPhone 17 pro and iPhone Air

iphone 17 pro can successfully use Face ID (screen lock toggled off) and set the duration to every 4 hours. It can be toggled on and off and on and off freely.

iPhone air cannot. Same settings, same software, same everything. The ONLY way to get the option to require any duration other than immediately is to have Face ID completely disabled.

So how is phone A different from phone B? Same settings, same banking apps, the only difference is the physical phone.

It is the first thing I try with every update. 17 pro never has any issues, iPhone air is the opposite.

That is not true on my 17 pro. Same payment methods on both phones. 17 pro allows 4 hours, air only allows immediately. I can’t stress enough how everything about both phones is identical, yet the allowances are different.

I’m not sure if you know this or not but that’s actually what this thread is for; explaining problems and attempting solutions, not being told it is what it is and to deal with it over and over. If two id phones on identical hardware have different settings capabilities then clearly there is an issue somewhere we are trying to solve, but for whatever reason you keep just saying it’s supposed to be that way, which makes no sense

not sure if videos are allowed or not but here’s a simple video showing the issue. All security type settings are the same for both phones and both have any kind of screen time or parental controls disabled.

Thankfully everything still functions as it did on my iPhone 17 Pro Max.

it would be annoying to have to enter the passcode every single time verification is required, but my concern is using the passcode to authorise an Apple Pay transaction, I have noticed retailers putting cameras up and looking down on the self service terminals, which can potentially (or do) see you enter your passcode.

That is not the subject of the discussion, there has been no change that would inhibit use of faceID for Apple Pay.

And to the person whose post was removed...

... we explained that not only is that the way it has always happened with home button phones, and it seems face ID phones have caught up, only a foolhardy user would have anything other than "Immediately require passcode" with a portable device.

No good complaining that they don't like the one facility that makes immediately requiring authentication seamless whilst retaining security.

FaceID operation has not changed, so using this so-called change an excuse not to use biometrics is illogical.

I’m not sure how proving you wrong warrants you calling me irresponsible and you somehow get to keep your comment. Don’t worry how others choose to use their phones and focus on the actual topic at hand. any private app still asks for Face ID or passcode so I’m having trouble seeing the issue. Like you realize we’re only talking about unlocking from lock screen, right? Any banking app or personal information still requires a Face ID or passcode to access. So once again you’re using how you feel people “should” use faceID to halt any type of steps to actually figure out what causes the issue.
