How to restore 'After 4 hours' option for passcode requirement in Face ID settings on iPhone 17?

As I have a new look, faceid didn’t recognize me a few times. So I had to go to “Face ID & Passcode” to give the new look - it scanned again my face. Don’t remember what exactly I pressed more in the “Face ID & Passcode” options BUT my iphone 17 doesn’t give me anymore the “After 4 hours” option in “Require Passcode”.

I tried enabling/disabling “iPhone Unlock” in “Use Face ID For”

I tried enabling/disabling “Stolen Device Protection” and no change! The phone doesn’t give me anymore the “After 4 hours”

I own one more iphone - iphone 15. What annoys me even more is that on my second iphone, I had to update the new look as well. Then it didn’t show the “After 4 hours” option as well, BUT after a few clicks in the menu of “Face ID and passcode”, it DOES show me the “After 4 hours” - can’t recall what exact clicks I made, but now both phones are EXACTLY the same in options enabled BUT one iphone shows “After 4 hours” while the other shows only one option “Immediately” when I go to “Require Passcode”

I have the 2 phones like this:

iPhone 17 pro - iOS 26.2

iPhone 15 pro - was iOS 26.1 (now iOS 26.2)

Why!?

It can’t be the different iOS because I just updated also my iphone 15 to iOS 26.2 but it still gives me the 4 hours option.

Original Title: My iphone keeps requiring me passcode or FaceId when I unlock it. In settings “Face ID & Passcode” gives no other option than “Immediately” in the “Require Passcode” menu - “After 4 hours” and the rest are GONE!

You can report my post with pleasure.

Yes I know this is about opening with face ID and keeping the 4 hours without needing authentication.

And to repeat , setting "Require Passcode" to 4 hours on a portable device is irresponsible (not the word I would prefer), and with Face ID, Require "Immediately" is no problem. If they did make it compulsory like on Home button phones with Apple Pay, then that is a good decision.

Not meaning to be argumentative. But not having the device lock immediately is how scammers get control of your device. An example would be someone steals your iPhone. They request information that requires 2FA and are able to gain control of bank accounts, Apple Accounts and much more.

So, the risk is real. It’s your choice whether to risk exposing your financial information, personal photos, emails and more or take adequate precautions to protect yourself and others. Good luck!

Multiple people (myself included) have shown that that isn’t always the case. Multiple people have posted images and I even posted a video showing that that isn’t the case. You keep ignoring all of that just to link the same articles that go against everything you’re claiming. So you can link as many urls as you want but it doesn’t help answer anything . I’ve even shown that restoring from a phone that lets you set it to 4 hours lets both phones set faceID correctly which goes against everything you keep linking. Whatever apple claims vs what’s happening in real time doesn’t always align and that’s what me along with other people are trying to figure out.

no one is arguing about what apple is saying. We’re trying to figure out why it allows it (going completely against your words) in some cases and not in others. Clearly there was SOMETHING different about one phone compared to another where restoring from a backup magically worked. The work comes from figuring out what that is.

im not trying to get worked up over such a small issue, because really its just a minor annoyance than anything else. The frustration is coming from constantly linking articles that just completely don’t align with what’s actually happening so how much weight can actually be put in to those articles? It’s to the point where it just feels like autobot responses. Quite simply, if this question was asked because no one in the world could set their time to 4 hours, your link would make sense. The problem is there’s a ton of people (myself included) who can do things that go against your article so your article is a void point. There is no sense in linking the article again unless you have an answer as to why so many people are able to do the exact opposite of what your article says.

Has anyone figured out the fix for this issue? I have what appears is the exact same problem.

I had FaceID set up for years. I had turned off FaceID for unlock and set unlock with passcode after 4 hours. Had it this way for a very long time and across two phones 14pro and now 17pro.

When I reset face ID on the 17pro it no longer allows anything other than immediately and it also reset the Face ID on the other phone and now only allows immediately.

I don't have Apple Pay setup (unless it somehow got setup automatically during some update that I didn't know about) and I have the FaceID for Unlock off.

This is clearly a bug of some sort and I'm just trying to figure out if there is something on the way or a checklist of things to make sure are checked/not checked to get it working the way it was 10 minutes ago before I re-took my FaceID image.

Confirmed. I have no cards in the apple wallet (and I made no changes to apple wallet when I updated my face ID).

This absolutely did work the same way the OP stated for me as well and as soon as I updated my face ID -immediately became the only option.

I have read thousands of posts that say "just turn off FaceID for unlock and the passcode options come back" and that has NOT worked for me at all.

I rarely use sites like this because people can be extremely rude and unhelpful. Food for thought!

Backing up one iPhone and then cloning on to another to return the up to four hours option, doesn't work for everyone. It certainly didn't work for me.

Surely the overall level of security is up to me, not Apple. Immediate is problematic requiring adequate lighting, the right angle of the device and I would personally like Apple to give customers options, not force feed us what they want and how they want us to use our Apple devices.

For me the security risk is having to use the passcode for Apple Pay transactions (when after four hours is engaged). Those cameras about the self serve checkouts at the supermarket could quite easily capture when six digits you press.

Apple Pay is most secure when biometrics is used. Biometrics is one of the major reasons bank’s prefer Apple Pay, statistically it lowers the risk of fraudulent activity on your account. Bank’s permit the use of passcodes, but it’s not as secure as biometrics. Having a long wait time increases the risk of fraudulent activity and banks want their cards secured. In your scenario the supermarket having your passcode is a minimal risk without your physical device. Apple, I think errors on the side of caution, at least partly in deference to the banks and how they prefer to handle increased potential of fraud.

Thank you for posting this video. I have this exact same issue and people don't seem to understand what I'm referring to other than to 'Disable FaceID entirely' which is not how it previously worked. I have a iPhone 16 Pro. It worked like normal on my 13 Pro. My housemate has an iPhone 16, with the same iOS on his phone and he has all the options available whereas I only have immediately. I have tried absolutely everything.

Wondering if anyone has been able

to find a solution to this. It’s a real issue for me and I’d like to figure out how to get this back to something other than immediately.

It’s got be some magic combination of settings that creates the bug and I’m literally trying to turn everything on or

off to see if that does the trick but that is a tall order on a device with a million+ possible combinations.

Any help on how to fix it is still appreciated.

My wife has the exact same phone- literally we bought them at the same time- she uses apple wallet, etc and she is able to disable FaceID for unlock and set the passcode required for 4 hours. It’s crazy that I can’t find anyone that knows the right combination of settings to get this back.

seriously would Consider wiping my phone and starting over but only if I knew definitively that it would do the trick.

I tried every combination relating to face ids, and no luck. As my last resort, I resetted my face id (if you have stolen device protection on, turn it off first and wait for an hour), and as I checked the require passcode option, all of the options are back including 4 hours! But, if I set up face id again, the option goes back to immediately only.

That is expected behavior.

Imo, this is still better than having to enter your passcode everytime you turn your screen off.

If you have FaceID enabled, you don't need to enter your passcode every time the screen goes off.

You should know, we don’t all just leave our iPhones lying around for anyone to pick up. As this is clearly a glitch since iOS18, because not everyone is affected even if they have the latest version of iOS.

Surely it is up to users to take responsibility for their actions and if they want the four hour time limit. Not you. Not Apple.

You should know that as long as Face ID (or Touch ID on devices that support it) there has NEVER been an option other than Immediate.

You can let Apple know your views on this subject: https://feedback.apple.com

And Apple is very concerned about your security, because if you left your device open and someone used it to steal from you it’s likely that you complain publicly or might even sue Apple. So security on Apple devices isn’t just to protect you, it is also to protect Apple’s reputation and legal obligations.
