iOS 26.2.1 has rendered my phone unusable

Hello,

Since updating to iOS 26.2.1, my iPhone has effectively become unusable.

The update now requires approximately 30GB of free storage, and despite deleting apps and files repeatedly, the issue persists. Almost all of my apps crash, freeze, or become completely unresponsive. The only temporary workaround is rebooting the phone, but the same problems return within 10 minutes.

This cycle repeats constantly:

  • Apps crashing or freezing
  • Forced reboot
  • Temporary functionality
  • Failure again shortly after

No amount of deleting apps or files resolves the issue. This update has made basic phone usage impossible.

This is extremely disappointing and feels like a major regression from previous iOS versions, which were stable and reliable on this same device. iOS 26.2.1 has significantly reduced functionality and usability, and I strongly urge Apple to address this issue or roll back to a more stable version.

At the moment, this update feels unfinished and seriously flawed.

I had this very same issue about two weeks ago. Thankfully, I have AppleCare+ because what it ended up being was a very corrupted issue. They had to replace everything except for the glass and back of my phone. I had reported this bug to them online, and they said to bring it into an Apple store. I had run diagnostics at home, and said everything was fine, but clearly not in my lived experience. However, once I got there and pulled that diagnostic report up within the Apple store on a different menu, the diagnostic report said 'PANIC' all over it, and the issue was serious enough the phone was going into panic, then reboot. Anyways glad I had apple care, the cost came up and said 479 waived through apple care.

To fix the severe, unusable state of your iPhone following the iOS 26.2.1 update, characterized by critical storage, frequent app crashes, and forced reboots, you must immediately address the massive "System Data" consumption caused by the update.

The most effective solutions are to turn off automatic updates (to disable "Reserved Auto-Update Space") and to perform a full backup and restore via a computer.

Immediate Troubleshooting Steps

  • Disable Automatic Updates: Go to Settings > General > Software Update and turn off Automatic Updates. This stops the "Reserved Auto-Update Space" feature that may be, in some cases, taking up over 10GB of space.

  • Hard Restart: Force quit all apps, then perform a hard restart: Press Volume Up, then Volume Down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.

  • Clear System Data/Cached Data: The update may be rebuilding system caches. Let the phone sit idle (plugged into power and Wi-Fi) for several hours to allow this background process to finish.

Permanent Solutions (If Above Fails)

  • Restore via Computer (Best Option): Back up your phone to a computer (Mac/PC) using Finder or iTunes. Once fully backed up, choose the option to Restore the iPhone from that backup. This process cleans up the storage management system and often resolves the "System Data" bloat.

  • Reset All Settings: Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings. This will not delete your data, but it will revert system settings to default, fixing, for example, issues with custom home screen icons.

  • Free Up Space via Offloading: Navigate to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Use the recommendations to offload, rather than delete, large apps, which saves, for example, your data while freeing up space.

If these methods do not work, it is recommended to contact Apple Support, as a clean installation of the iOS version via a computer may be required.

You may have a storage error on your iPhone. The recommended procedure to remedy this is to backup your iPhone to iCloud or a computer, erase your device to factory settings and the restore your iPhone from the backup. I’ve provided several Apple Support articles at the links below that give step by step instructions.

Yes, I suspect it is your System Data that is growing on your device and gets difficult to manage yourself when you have run into a storage issue and trying to free up space. Apps would crash when there was no room to store their cache data or perform memory swaps, then when you free up space there is room to store those cache files so it fills up again. Any iCloud data that previously was unable to sync to your device would then be able to use that space too.

And to top it off, when you mark data to be deleted, it is not actually removed immediately. Freeing the space so that it can be used for another purpose requires a background process to go through and zero the data that you previously said you want deleted, and that is done when the OS determines it is most convenient by not interfering with what you are doing. The Restore using a computer will get you back on track.

I had to make room once again for this (I will call buggy) update in my iPhone 11 (offloaded a number of apps temporarily to make room) and then once I was able to update to this release, I noticed that my iphone storage space (64GB) would not release or go down like all other updates. Before the update I managed to trim it down to ~51GB but then after the update it was at 63.5GB and would not go down at all! I also saw under Iphone Storage>>iOS, it was listing some "auto-update" storage as almost 7GB which should not be in there / released after an update and it was not being cleared! Even after 7 reboots of my phone (soft and hard). The only way to get rid of it was to reset my phone (not erase). After which that storage disappeared, HOWEVER.. The total iphone storage space was still reading 63.5GB taken and I could not reload the apps that I previously offloaded! I even tried deleting a few apps worth about 2GB and the storage still read 63.5GB as if something was corrupted by 26.2.1 and again even reboots would not clear the storage :( This was extremely frustrating and even the Apple Store admitted that this release was causing a lot of issues and essentially BROKE my phone. If the iPhone 11 could not "handle" this release, then it should not have been pushed to my phone in the 1st place! I ended up then spending $$ to purchase an iPhone 16 which I really didn't want to do but had no choice as I did not want to go through the headaches of wiping my iphone 11 and restoring everything and still see the issue. Apple seems to not have any comment or apology and yes, my phone was working just FINE prior to 26.2.1.

Remove all add-on VPN apps. This to test without an app that can crash things.

I’m testing with some Liquid Glass setting tinted, and that seems to have helped, though the performance might also be from the 26.2.1 that happened around the same time. (Yeah, making two changes at the same time wasn’t a good idea for troubleshooting.)

Then perform a backup, reset, reinstall iOS, and restore, if problems persist. This to remove any persistent corruptions.

Crashing can also be a weak battery or failing hardware. That heads for repair or replacement.

As for AI replies in forums, those can double the work involved around here as both the original question and the AI autocomplete-generated text can need help.

What you describe sounds like an issue with the storage that had maxed out where it can be difficult to free up space. That will certainly happen with any OS version especially when you are syncing data to iCloud that is also full.

The info provided by KiltedTim will definitely get you on the right path by installing the OS again on a clean device. After that I would post both the iPhone storage and iCloud storage graph to see how much breathing room you have.

Same. Apple should replace my phone. I’m using Facebook Messenger to make phone calls when home. Camera issues, connectivity issues, loading time, phone heats up like heater, crashes-it’s horrible. Too many issues to list.

You can contact Apple Support using the link at the bottom left of every page of the forums to discuss that. Or, if you have an Apple Store near you, you can make an appointment.

It’s unbelievable how disruptive this is, especially in a healthcare setting when every few minutes you have to restart the phone and when it does come up, the keypad freezes and you have to restart.

Apple must address this issue ASAP.

My wife recently updated her phone to iOS 26.2.1, and immediately after, she couldn't make calls or use cellular data. She uses two eSIMs (different carriers and countries), and both stopped working.

She contacted Apple Support, and they ran hardware analytics and several tests, including toggling the eSIMs and enabling roaming. Even though the issue happened on both lines, Apple insisted it was a carrier issue and told her to get a new eSIM QR code.

After finishing the tests and trying to reset her settings, she noticed the eSIM had actually removed itself from the phone. She managed to get a new QR code from the local carrier to restore it, and the phone is finally making calls again.

However, since the update, the GPS is also acting up. Apps like Waze, Google Maps, and Uber aren't working properly.

I’m 100% sure the 26.2.1 update broke both the eSIM and GPS functionality. The main problem is that Apple won't admit it's a software bug, and they haven't provided a fix or a way to downgrade without wiping the phone's data.

Yes, thank you for your input. This is a discussion forum after all.

I was being perfectly serious with you. The huge majority of iphones do not suffer from "every few minutes you have to restart the phone and when it does come up, the keypad freezes and you have to restart" If yours does then your phone or your app portfolio need technical attention. Apple support can help you with diagnosis.

Sarcasm is also the lowest form of comedy.
