My MacBook has just decided that it will change the size of the windows I am using.
Often the top (say in Safari, the bit with the URL) is off the screen.
If I try to move the window, the Mac chooses which size to use.
I can work around it, but there must be a more elegant solution.

The default macOS configuration is to have an app window fill the entire screen when the window is dragged/placed immediately below the menubar. Also, dragging a window to the far left/right side will enable tiling which will also auto adjust the app window size.
You can turn these options off if you wish. They are located in the "Desktop & Dock" System Settings. Scroll down to the section titled "Windows".

I think that Apple must have started making the very annoying "Drag windows to menu bar to fill screen" the default in macOS 14 (Sonoma) or 15 (Sequoia).
It is easy to touch that menu bar when you are working with nearly-full-screen windows, and resizing the windows or dragging them around.
