iPhone Air volume buttons affecting notification tones and keyboard clicks despite 'Change with Buttons' setting off

Hi there,

I am a recent convert to apple, this week I bought both an iPad and an iphone air. Today I noticed when lowering volume using the side buttons on the iPhone air it also lowers notification tones and keyboard clicks. I checked the settings to confirm it was not cause by the “change with buttons” setting within the “sounds and haptics” menu. This option was in fact turned to the off position. I have turned this setting on then off which made this setting perform as it should until I locked the screen and reopened it, it would then revert back to its original state. So to clarify with the side buttons set to affect media volume only it is also affecting notifications and typing click. Please help by explaining if I am missing a setting or if this is a potential software glitch that needs addressing.

Many thanks

Excellent job troubleshooting this!

Notification Sounds and Tap Sounds Decreasing:

Notification have their own volume options, Whereas taps don't. So, this is obviously a bug.

Start with a Force Restart on Both Models:

  1. Go Here: Force restart iPhone - Apple Support
  2. Go Here: If your iPad won't Turn On or is Frozen - Apple Support

Update your Devices:

  • Update your iPhone to the Latest iOS.

IMPORTANT: If you have an option to update, however, then be certain you backup your iPhone first. That way, you will have something to restore your iPhone from should anything go wrong with the update

  • Update your iPad to the Latest iPad:

Thank you, this seems to have been helpful. I have to say this has been the only issue I have had with the phone. I am amazed at how clever the iPhone and tablet are, certainly way better for me than android. I especially like the short cuts and automations, I have been playing with those all week.

Being this is a bug, and update are of no fix, I recommend you report this to Apple.

Report this to Apple:

Do your Part: Provide Apple with feedback on this, letting them know about this issue.  Apple may not get back to you directly, but the more feedback they receive on this, the more they will know what is occurring, and what bug fixes to include in updates to come. Apple will know nothing of this, if you don't report it to them.

  1. Go Here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple
  2. Select: "Bug Report" for the "Feedback Type"
  3. Comment: that this all began after installing an update. Include the URL of this thread
  4. Proceed from there as necessary
