iOS ringer volume too loud and alarm not sounding

in the last 24 hours, the ringtone volume has become disproportionately loud (notifications, and screen locked sound)

I tried lowering the volume down through the settings, all the way to a quarter, and in the test it sounds fine.

Then it was fine also for about 30 mins, and then again became super loud.. went back to settings, the slider was in place. gave it a nudge to "refresh" it, and then it went back to normal...

Also, i set an alarm for today at 10:00 AM, which did not make a sound. i woke up later seeing the alarm on screen, waiting for me to close it, with no sound at all!

These are all new issues. I updated to iOS 26.3 ~3 days ago, and everything worked fine.

I tried reproducing it by opening videos with sound, playing with volume, turning on/off silent mode but no luck.

If the alarm volume is too low or quiet --> How to set and change alarms on your iPhone

Do Not Disturb, the Ring/Silent switch and Silent mode don't affect the alarm sound. If you use the Ring/Silent switch or Action button to turn on Silent mode or turn on Do Not Disturb, the alarm still sounds.

If your alarm doesn't sound or is too quiet, or if your iPhone only vibrates, check the following:

  • Set the volume on your iPhone. If your alarm volume is too low or too loud, press the volume up or volume down button to adjust it. You can also go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics and drag the slider under Ringtone and Alerts.
  • If your alarm only vibrates, make sure your alarm sound isn't set to None. Open the Clock app, tap the Alarms tab, then tap Edit. Tap the alarm, then tap Sound and choose a Sound.
  • If you connect headphones to your iPhone, the alarm will play at a set volume through the built-in speakers on your iPhone as well as wired and wireless headphones.
  • When you use StandBy, haptics for your alarms are disabled. To make sure that your alarm sound isn't set to None: open the Clock app, tap the Alarms tab, then tap Edit. Tap the alarm, then tap Sound and choose a Sound.

Manually adjusting the time on your iPhone in Settings to change app behaviour, like game timers, isn't recommended and can affect alarms.

Thanks for the detailed reponse.

I had the change ringer volume with buttons settings off since i got the phone, only touched it today after the issue occurred.

The alarm has a sound too.

My best guess is that i fell asleep with an AirPod in my ear, then it fell off, and the ear detection sensors were activated somehow (maybe the blanket/pillow covered them or something) which caused the alarm to go off in the airpods instead of the speaker

The loud volume issue is also gone for now.

Again, thanks for the help!
