Itunes 10 and Tiger 10.4.11

Just downloaded iTunes 10 and it says it works with 10.5 upwards only but the website says:

Macintosh Software
Mac OS X version 10.4.11 or later; Mac OS X version 10.5 or later is required to play an iTunes LP or iTunes Extras
QuickTime 7.6 or later
Support for HE-AAC requires QuickTime 7.6.4 and Mac OS X version 10.5 or later
Safari 4.0.3 or later
200MB of available disk space

Anyone else had this problem?

Powerbook 15 G4, Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I stand (slightly) corrected. The iTunes store is still supporting my config. However, iTunes 8.2.1 reports on launch that there is a new version (!0.!.2) available. If you use Software Update to check for updates, it reports that there are no updates available. So if you hot to Apple.com to download the new iTunes manually you find a link to 10.1.2 (which won't install under os 10.4.11) and a link to 8.2.1 (which won't access the iTunes store). After a little more Googling, I found this link:

http://appldnld.apple.com/iTunes9/061-8440.20100616.Tnzs2/iTunes9.2.dmg

on www.mydigitallife.info. Had I known specifically that this would solve my issue, I could have found it via searching apple support to get to this page:

http://support.apple.com/kb/SP573

But how hard it would it have been for Apple to include that link on the 10.1.2 download page? Indeed how hard would it be to do so now?

True. In fact, the lack of coordination between update servers is what brought many (incl. me) to this thread. It was a step in the right direction for software update to report no updates available, given that it won't run under older OSes. I agree Apple could improve on showing a consolidated webpage making this crystal-clear, ALA like "eat THIS, not THAT" (Apple has to do this with displaying compatible RAM for 100's of computers, so it's not like they have no experience in explaining confusing topics to non-geeky customers).

But yes, to be clear, the OP (or mod) should rename this thread as, "Tiger 10.4.11 allows no higher than iTunes 9.2.1", as that would be the proper answer.

As far as your other issues you mentioned about Apple forgetting working out bugs in the rush to seek new product sales, I agree. Preaching to the choir, my friend.

The latest example I ran into was how even the latest version of iTunes really doesn't support multiple devices running different versions of iOS using the same library.

As an example, I use an iPhone 4 running iOS 4.2.1, and also have an iPhone 2G (which was orphaned on 3.1.2). I don't disagree with why the iP2 cannot run 4.2.1 (it can barely handle 3.1.2), but the lack of support in iTunes is discouraging.

What I'm referring to is the fact that the iTunes library contains only ONE Mobile Applications folder, and older versions of iOS apps are overwritten to support the NEWEST device, even if the update cannot run on the older device that iTunes KNOWS is being synced with the same library. Unfortunately, iTunes is not sophisticated enough (by omission, accidental or otherwise) to keep the older version, whether by creating a separate folder for the older iOS device, or simply relabeling the older version (of course, this would require mobile app developers to send a flag, listing compatibility; Apple would have to fix iTunes to keep track of it all).

That example reminded me of my own advice against mixing devices from various generations on newer versions of OS X (e.g. my iP4 syncs with an Intel Mac Mini running 10.6.6. My solution is to sync the iP2 with my laptop, and avoid updates that won't run under 3.1.2. Also, keep a back-up of older versions of mobile apps, so you can always revert if you accidentally update).

@@@@

BTW, Apple released an iTunes 10.1.1 update yesterday that amongst other things, adds support for the NEW Apple TV so as to allow AirPlay; I can't disagree that Apple clearly is flush with their recent success, and understands that it's hard to keep up those numbers without generating sales of NEW devices. That's not decrying them for doing so, it's just a fact. I agree that they'll burn bridges with long-term customers by not supporting legacy products, realizing that it's a balancing act.

The iPhone 3G requires iTunes 7.7 or later -> iPhone 3G - Technical Specifications
iPhone 3GS requires iTunes 9.2 or later -> iPhone 3GS Technical specs

To get Leopard, have him call Apple Online store (1-800-MY APPLE (692-7753) and ask for a Product Specialist.
All Mac OS X 10.5+ installers are for non-PowerPC Macs. Intel only.

This is incorrect.
10.5 will install on PowerPC.

"Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard requires:

A Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or Power PC G4 (867 MHz or faster) processor
512 MB memory or more
A DVD drive for installation
9 GB of available disk space or more "

Hi,
I found iTunes 9.2.1 and installed it instead of iTunes 10 on my Powerbook G4 with Tiger 10.4.11 and it synced up to my new iphone G3s smoothly.
I found it here on Apples site at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1056.
From what I've found iTunes 10 will nt work on Tiger and this is the way to go.

Good luck, and thanks to Apple for having iTunes 9.2.1 available for those of us who LOVE our 12inch G4:)

I haven't reviewed this forum in a while, since realizing there is no easy answer to this issue. Buying a new Mac-Mini does not solve as I need my laptop for day-to-day business. Nor does using any window parallel. Besides, as fluent as I am in Windows, I HATE the platform! Oh, and good luck if you need support for Virtual PC. I have been running VPC since before Microsoft bought out the company. If you even manage to get tech support on the phone for the product they will tell you they can't help you because it's installed on a Mac. Ummm...***???

So, I have figured out this workflow if you can call it that.

  1. In my laptop (10.4.11) Back up iCal data (ditto for any contact data, etc).
  2. In my MacPro, access the laptop through my Ethernet connection
  3. In my MacPro iCal, restore the data using the file stored on the laptop
  4. In iTunes 10, synch the MacPro version of the calendar
  5. Then - to make sure iCal entries entered directly in the iPod are synched to laptop iCal, I back up the MacPro iCal version
  6. Take that backup file and dump into the laptop (through the ethernet connection)
  7. In laptop, restore that iCal using the file from the Mac Pro.

Clearly, I must get down on my knees and worship Apple and give many thanks for the ease its product has brought unto my life.

It appears the systems requirement info was incorrect and should have been changed for iTunes 10 which only works if you are using 10.5 upwards.

This lack of support by Apple for 10.4.11 is now getting quite silly and is costing them loss sales of iPhones and iPods etc. If they are not going to support 10.4.11 anymore they need to put 10.5 back on the Apple store for purchase for all those people that have Power PC Macs. Or makes 10.5 free if you purchase a iPad, iPhone or iTouch if you need it.

Looks like apple did screw up.

I was giving them the benefit of the doubt, that there might more then one version... to download, and that they forgot to include the 10.4 option when choosing your download...

but alas,

They updated the site to say:

Macintosh Software
* Mac OS X version 10.5 or later

So looks like a $4000 3yr Old computer to them is out of scope, but a $500 5yr old PC is with scope.

Way to back up your over priced products Apple.

I'll be sure to note this when requesting my computer replacement at work.

Sep 2, 2010 12:59 PM in response to Stewart Allen1

Apple updated their site.

It now only reads

Macintosh Software

* Mac OS X version 10.5 or later

Chances are there will not be enough complaints from the 10.4 community to get apple to spend an extra day to two to program the update for us.

What ever, I'll likely be getting a New PC in a couple months anyway.

Sadly the argument for spending a little extra on a Mac over a PC is not only getting hard to do these days, it become downright impossible.

Wow. I just made an account just so I could get my voice heard about how ridiculous this is! How are they not supporting us, their own customers with products that aren't even that old. Why Apple, why?! All I can think now is that perhaps I need a new computer, and I can also think who I wouldn't buy from if they don't offer this basic support for customers who spend the extra money to buy Apple products.

Please release an iTunes we can install please...soon!

Sep 2, 2010 3:22 PM in response to Stewart Allen1

It's ridiculous... I can't find OS 10.5 to buy from the Apple website, and on Amazon it's £139.99 (US$215.50), which is not really an incentive to upgrade.

As other people said, it's incredible that Apple supports Windows XP to run iTunes 10, but seems to have forgotten about a slightly older version of its own operating system which should still be capable of running it if XP can... Especially considering I have a MacBook Pro with an Intel processor.

I really hope they do something about this. They really let me down here.

Hey everyone,

I just registered so I too could throw in a few words. Complete and total BS... Support for the cryptic and outdated windows XP, but no support for a mac operating systems that is less than half as old. This must be some kind of joke. I've had it up to here with crapple. Even if I wanted to update to 10.5 (which I don't), I couldn't possibly do it because Leopard isn't sold any more. And the icing on the cake is I've just uninstalled itunes because I was having some problems with my ipod, and I can't find a place to download any itunes compatible with 10.4.11 anywhere on the apple site. I could probably find 8.X somewhere and slowly update it, but come on. I might as well go pick up a used PC with XP for $100 off craigslist, that way I will certainly be garunteed software support from apple for many years to come. Yikes!
